New Computer

Hello everyone I am new to this site. I ended up here by searching for a list of parts to build a computer. I have never done it before and am planning on trying it out. I do play some games but mostly it is for net surfing and home business stuff. So if anyone can help me out with a good list of quality parts that I should be looking for would be great. I live in Canada so I hope any online stores you mention ship to Canada. I will at the beginning use my existing monitor keyboard mouse and speaker system.

I am thinking around 800 I am hoping that is enough for a decent computer. My current computer isn't that old well a couple of years but I am planning on buying components every couple of weeks when pay day rolls around and then get it done up when everything is here

Was out looking in stores today. Now you can all tell me the truth once you build one you want to keep building more right? It looks like it could get so addicting especially with new stuff always coming out. This maybe a dangerous venture but I sure want to build one now.

My favorite site for computer components is www.tigerdirect.com. I'd keep an eye on that site and buy components that are highly rated and on special. This one looks pretty neat.

Alternatively, www.zipzoomfly.com and www.newegg.com are also reputable retailers. I am sure all three ship to Canada. I don't know of any sites that ship from Canada, but somebody else might be able to help?

There actually is also a newegg.ca, although whether shipping is factored as a cost within canada, I have no idea.

Thanks for the starting places. Can anyone recommend certain components or manufacturers that are better then others? I am very new and really don't know much about this stuff.

For motherboards: some Asus, Gigabyte, DFI. For RAM: OCZ, Crucial. For power supplies: OCZ, PC Power and Cooling, Corsair. For hard drives: Seagate. For graphics cards, it's hard to go wrong with most decent cards - nVidia, higher than an 8800GT if you want to game (GTX 260 is a great card right now); ATi, higher than a 4770; 4850 or 4870 1GB versions are very solid.

Pick your AMD or Intel processor (Phenom II series for AMD, Core 2 Quad or Core i7 for Intel), and we can organize a good setup around that chipset.

I recommend the components I have selected in the image in my attachment. You can see the price breakdown, and the total which comes in under your budget (prices are in Canadian).

    Here are the links:

All of these parts are very high quality and compatible with one another. I did not have to cut corners with this system.

Also: we'd appreciate if you shop through newegg from this link:

It helps IC and doesn't cost you anything extra. Thank you!

With the components listed above I would still need to pick out dvd drive, hard drive and stuff wouldn't I? Is my budget to low for everything included for 800? Besides and OS keyboard and mouse?

I forgot about the drives. I'll make some tweaks. :) Shouldn't be a problem.

I kept all of the above and added the following do they work with the other components?

    <ahref=http: www.newegg.ca="" product="" product.aspx?item="N82E16822148395"> http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129034

The power supply is sold out right now but I am looking at only an extra 140 bucks or so. Is it worth it for these items are are there other items of same quality at a lower price. Or I might even have something that isn't compatible with the other components listed.

Its absurd to spend 60 dollars on a dvd burner. This hdd and optical should do you fine.

801.44 is total before tax and shipping add another 75 for the power supply that is sold out right now and really not a whole lot more then what I started out for. Like I said I will be buying parts over time so I can always watch out for more deals on them. Sp an extra 100 from the parts Thrax showed me. is 100 a good amount to spend on a HD and Burner or am I kinda cheaping out

$100 is fine to spend on a burner and hard disk. Glad you got it sorted out. :) This computer will blow your mind; seriously, you'll love it. Great rig.

The power supply was deactivated is there another that you would recommend? Not sure if they are getting or if they won't be carrying it anymore.

Is this power supply close to the original you mentioned Thrax?

<a href=http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017>http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017</a&gt; I was reading other reviews on the Tuniq and there were some not so good ones on it.

Some advice: People who leave reviews on Newegg are not trustworthy. They only complain when they got a bad part, because everyone who is satisfied with their component never returns to speak well of it. To wit, I've never received a bad part from Newegg in 9 years, and I have never once left a positive (or negative) comment.

But yeah, that OCZ unit is fine.

Oh I totally understand about the squeaky wheel. I was service industry and very very few with good experiences ever say anything about 99% of the ones with bad experiences will comment the other 1% just vent to their friends and warn them about it. I just saw that the OCZ was the same brand as the first one and is $2 more thent eh Tuniq so wondering if the OCZ is a better quality

Hah, service industry. That makes two of us. :) Yes, the OCZ is a better unit.

I have a couple more umm stupid questions. Does all the cabling come with the components? Also to hook the new computer up to the internet is that card already on the motherboard with the USB's and sound jacks?

Ok more silly questions on power supply. I was looking at shipping charges and they can really add up so I looked at PSU's with free shipping at newegg.ca
<a href=http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017>This one is cheaper but charges shipping</a>
<a href=http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341018>This one is more expensive but free shipping</a>

There would only be a $4 difference is the more expensive one a better PSU? Like I said I am really new at this so I hope all these stupid questions don't bother you guys.

The more expensive w/ free shipping is an AMAZING PSU. Seriously.
