Excellent,

I will explain a way to get Outlook back in working order but we will get to a point that we will get rid of the file that contains all your current emails, so we need to backup.

Because you can view your messages, backup all the info you want to keep out of them. Copy/paste any text you need into text documents, save any attachments or images outside of Outlook.

Close out of Outlook all together and click Start -> Control Panel -> Mail -> Data Files

Here we see the data files associated with Outlook on your computer. Most likely there is only one listed here, click on it to select it and click Settings. In the File Name field you should see something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Personal Folders.pst

The last part there is what we are interested in. In my example: Personal Folders.pst. Just note the name of this file. Then click Cancel and back on the Data Files screen click on Open Folder. this will open the folder containing your data files. Find the file we noted above. Right click the file and click rename and name it something different. Maybe: OldPersonalFolders.pst

Then close this folder and click Close on both the Data Files and Mail Setup windows.

Now reopen Outlook as you normally would, you will get a messages that the PST file we worked with above can not be found, click OK. On the next window click Open, then lastly on the next window click OK (don't change anything on those two windows, the default settings are as they should be)

You should now be in Outlook with a fresh (empty) set of folders and all should work as it was before this all happened.

If we are talking lots of files that you NEED to reference in Outlook on a regular basis, just let us know in a reply and I'll gather how to get those folders back into Outlook for reference.

HI Bobby,
ok so, it's working now except I lost all my files , everything, not just the in box? all my files and short cuts... here is what i did.

This is how it read and I changed the outlook 1 to outlook 2
Personal file ends in this:

\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst

archival files ends in this:

\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst

So, now , how do I get my files back... that would be great , please... and thank you..

Hi Jewel,

You didn't lose anything as long as you didn't delete anything. If you need to get back to the other files, go back into the folder and rename archive.pst back to Outlook1.pst.

I think you should be able to create another data set then rename the archive to the new account and that will put your old files alongside the new set. I'll have to test that at work tomorrow and if it works and you need a walkthrough I'll whip one up for you.

I have no idea what happened there. Why they saved that way is a whole other can of worms. You should be able to get into the originals with either of the above suggestions.

Hi Bobby, not sure what create another data set means.
HELP... I did not delete anyting.

I went into archive and renamed it Outlook1 and nothing happened.

from my other post:
THis is how it read and I changed the outlook 1 to outlook 2
Personal file ends in this:

\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst

archival files ends in this:

\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst

So, now , how do I get my files back... that would be great , please... and thank you..

I had not renamed archive, I had renamed Outlook 1 to Outlook 2. When it didn't show my files, I did try to change it back to Outlook 1 and it did not do anything. Should I restart?

IT looks to me that the biggest file is the Outlook?

HELP.

Good morning...
also, the file name has changed to something much short?

this is how they read now:
C:\My Documents Business\Outlook1.pst
and archive

Thank you.

We didn't do anything that would move your data set. If you rename the original file back to what the current file is called then you should be able to see your emails.

Double check that for me it doesn't look right.

First make sure that you still have that oultook1.pst file and archive files. However they got to where you are saying them now. I don't know, that file path just makes no sense and certainly not based on the help bobby has provided.

Next, with outlook closed. Go into control panel mail data files and remove the existing link.

Now open outlook and it should ask you to create a new data file give it the name Outlook. When it's done it will be blank.

Now in outlook go into file import/export and import in the outlook1.pst file that you have stored in that other folder.

What do you mean by remove the existing link....

This is getting ahead of me.... import/export from where?

First go back to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
and what is listed in that directory.

Secondly how did the outlook1 get into your my documents file. What are you doing? No one has told you to start moving files around, why are you moving files around that will only make things far more difficult to help you with and increase the very likely chance of you accidentally deleting your emails.
• edited January 2010
Thank you... I have NOT moved files. I am doing my absolute best to just do exactly as you say. I am not moving things. I have no idea how they moved or why.

In this file:
adult content
exception
junk
myname
myname
outcmd
outitems
outlook
outlook
outlook.srs
outiprint
views

AS I mentioned the size of any of these outlooks looks significantly small...

Those are the files in that directory?
Can you please go into shell (click on start>run>cmd) this will open up a dos box. Type the following command:
cd "\documents and settings\username\application data\local settings\microsoft\outlook"

then type in the command:
dir

Then please list the file names that show up along with their extensions and roughly their file sizes.

Just to clear up what we got goin' on here:

Jewel, From what you have told us you still have the Outlook2.pst that is your origional files, it is located in c:\documents and settings\Nancy Grace Horton\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

As long as this file is still there then we will still be able to get you to good.

Right now we are simply trying to figure out what is currently going on with your Outlook. By default when Outlook can not find the PST file it will automatically create a new one in C:\documents and settings\Nancy Grace Horton\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\ This is what we did to get your Outlook working again.

Lets focus on finding the current status of the files, follow kryyst's instructions using primesuspect's command code just above (The quotes should work but lets rule out any ambiguity)

dir

We will work on getting you back to square one and basically start over. By the way, the size of the PST file was probably the original problem. I've worked with many problems very similar to this that boils down to the file just getting too big for Outlook to deal with.

Have you manage to get into the outlook directory yet, where we go from here kinda depends on you being able to get us that information.

You usually don't need the quotes, but put them in just to make sure.
cd "\documents and settings\Nancy Grace Horton\application data\local settings\microsoft\outlook"

Then in that directory type the command:
dir

and give us the response. We need to see what files are there both their names, extensions and file sizes.

Is this possiblet to do over the phone please?
I am trying to follow your instructions but there has obviously been a major oops in this process, as I followed the original instructions and it created an unexpected error.
My number is xxxx if this is possible. Now I have tried to find what you have asked for and below is what it has given me. Now please remember (if this is actually important) that during the initial instructions some how the files were moved to a different spot that you thought I moved them to. Are we really going to be able to find my files as this is a very serious problem for me it deleted all my work files for the past 5+ years. I am running out of time to keep doing this online as I will be on the road working for the next month not on this computer. HELP!!!Thank you.
