IT says the system can not find this path... Remember that the files moved themselves:::??? Did you get my e-mail... Please call me. Thank you

Sorry - I don't do phone support for forum people, no way, no how. Without turning this into a rant. It's nothing personal it's just my own policy, to coin a phrase "Just looking out for my safety and sanity".

I deal with enough people on the phone during the day that I'm not about to add more to the mix and that certainly extends to my time at home with my family.

    ok lets try this
    cd "\doc*\na*\loc*\app*\mic*\out*"

If that doesn't get us to the directory we need then something is even more messed up.
  • edited January 2010
So, what are we going to do... I have no reason to rant, just want to follow your directions and get this fixed. Thanks for helping so what's am I going to do?
  • edited January 2010
OK,, I triend this last idea and yes it looks like it is really messed up now what?

If you're not able to get this fixed with forum support, chances are you should probably find a qualified local expert, such as Best Buy Geek Squad or something to that effect.
  • edited January 2010
Do you think it IS fixable?
    Should I call Outlook?
  • primesuspectprimesuspect Beepin n' Boopin Detroit, MI Icrontian
    edited January 2010
Yes, it's fixable. There is no such place as "outlook". You should take it to a computer store or find a local "computer technician" to help you. Again, try Best Buy geek squad.

I would be willing to give remote access a try, Jewel. If you have high speed internet (DSL, Cable...).

If you want to PM me your email address I can send you a remote access invite and take over your computer to try to resolve the issue. You would just have to install a small client software from a link (will be removed when done).

Unless you and Bobby have sorted things out remotely I'm going to try and go back to basics with more of a step by step.

First can you please confirm what version of Mail program you are running. Go into your mail program then the help menu and there will be a link that says "About Microsoft..." Open that up and at the top of the screen it will tell us all the version info, just the first line will suffice.

    Go back into shell and
    cd "\documents and settings"
    dir
    please give us the output

Then cd into your username (cd Nancy*)
    dir /ah
    please give us the output

    Then cd app*
    dir /ah
    please give us the output

    Then cd micros*
    dir
    please give us the output

    Then cd outlook
    dir
please give us the out put

Don't exit out of shell between each command. Notice that after the first cd \doc command each following cd command doesn't have the \ in front of it
so cd \microsoft is a very different command from cd microsoft.

Once I see the outputs from those directory listings I'll know more.

We prob should have been looking in "C:\My Documents Business" the entire time. Will have to try and import from those files when I can connect up again later.

Was there now doc\nancy\LOCAL\app\microsoft\outlook folder the local folder is hidden also.

That other folder usually just holds preferences and not that actual email store usually.

That aside if she has emails some how in that c:\documents my business folder.

Then go into control panel>mail and just delete her data stores.
Then start up outlook again it should prompt you for a new outlook data make sure you put it into c:\documents and settings\Nancy Grace Horton\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst
Her pop account should still be intact as you shouldn't have to delete it to create a new data store.

Then do file Import and Export
Import from another program or file
scroll down to Personal Folder File (.pst)
then browse to the \My documents Business folder and start importing in all the pst files.

Ok, was able to locate the original files. I missed the Local Settings folder when I was in there before. There is an Outlook 1 and Outlook 2 PST file. I was able to import Outlook 1 but then we ran into hard drive space issues. We know where the data is now and Jewel is going to take some time to try and clear some space on the hard drive. Once that is done she will be back in contact (in a couple weeks) and we can then import Outlook 2 and she should be all set.

Good work bobby. Probably running out of harddrive space is what caused the whole problem to begin with.

But glad to see things are starting to sort out now.

Some quick places to start clearing space. Go into internet explorer then go into tools, internet options, in the General tab look for the settings button under Browsing History and change the disk space to use to 50. I wouldn't be surprised if that freed up a gig right there.

Empty your recycling bin, then right click on it choose properties and set it to 1% instead of the default 10.

Once the outlook problems are sorted out. In outlook empty out deleted and sent messages also if you have junk messages dump them too.

There is also a windows harddrive cleanup tool that can seak out and remove temporary files that's worth running.

Those are all the basic and simple cleans but that could free up a gig or two easily. Then you have to get more aggresive and look to uninstalling programs that aren't needed anymore and adding perhaps an external harddrive to store data onto.

Jewel, a really easy way to free up some space that might be clogged by useless files is to download and run a program called CCleaner. Just press the "run cleaner" button on the "clean" tab like you see on this page: http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour/4-running-the-cleaner

Hi Bobby. I'm back to my office after a month away and hope you can revisit this with me. I left the software on the computer and we found everything in the Documents and Settings but I need to make room. I am connected to an external hard drive and need to figure out what I can move. Hope we can do this and I really appreciate all your help so very much!

Hey Jewel, Good to see you back in the game. I'm going to be swamped today at work. I may not be able to get to you 'til tomorrow. For now I would like you to take the suggestions that kryyst and Thrax suggested above.

...Some quick places to start clearing space.

There is also a windows harddrive cleanup tool that can seek out and remove temporary files that's worth running. Bobby Edit: Click Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Cleanup. This will scan the system for easily cleaned up items. It will show you how much space can be saved by doing each item it lists out. If the space to be cleaned is higher then 0, check the box (unless it is something you are not 100% sure about) and continue. Its pretty automated after that.

Jewel, a really easy way to free up some space that might be clogged by useless files is to download and run a program called CCleaner. Just press the "run cleaner" button on the "clean" tab like you see on this page: http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour/4-running-the-cleaner

After all that go back into My Computer and please Report back your "Available Space" on the C: drive.

    Hi Bobby,

    Is says 1.21 GB

I'm guessing that is not much. I am fine with deleting or moving programs or whatver to my external hard drive. Will that be a possible avenue to allow for more space?

    THanks,

    I'll talk to you tomorrow,
