I'm tearing up just reading your post, Brian. To me this feels like a good move for you. I wish you all the best with the application!
If you land the job at Yelp you will still be doing what you do so well: Giving people good information about something that's important to you. Whatever happens, Icrontic can do naught but cheer you on!
Just remember that Icrontic can always have your attention if you make sure that it is so. Juggling Icrontic and work at the same time can be rough, but a conscious effort to get it all done pays off.
Have people write up reviews for you on LinkedIn, that way you can use them for all future pursuits, be they for a Yelp alternative in case it doesn't work out, or for options after Yelp.
Brian, I think I speak for everyone when I say, whats best for Brian, is best for Icrontic.
In my experience with Icrontic events, its very obvious that you know businesses in Detroit and have an amazing passion for them. You also have this sense of optimism that Detroit needs. Yelp will be fortunate to have you.
You absolutely should be in this role. I have seen parts of the D that I would have never seen or known about if I had come as a traditional tourist. You brought me to Detroit, you will bring my wife to Detroit. You are Detroit!
You mean you haven't been working for Yelp all these years? Hmmmm.... go figure. Sure fooled me. You are the human Yelp for so many of us. Yelp would be silly to NOT hire you. You know and love the Detroit area. You are connected in Facebook, Twitter, 4-square, and so many other mediums. Good luck...
Get this job so you can go in with Pragtastic and I for expensive scotch next IC event!
Seriously though man, we want you to be happy, not poor and stressed. Can't promise the stress will go away, but if being able to enjoy a fantastic meal every once in awhile or a quick jaunt across the country for fun is worth it to you, then without question this is a good move.
And, of course, you know we'll always be here, and we'll always support you and your decisions. <4
Go for it, man. Sometimes, you can't monetize your passion as you thought. But you find out that you can do your passion in different ways, and glad to have you on "Team Detroit" as far as supporters go. I've been at that crux in my life before. It's tough, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
It's funny how connections and life works sometimes, good sir. Good luck!
