    423m/s. The engineering continues.

    //edit: 432 m/s.

    //edit: 438 m/s.

Took me all night... But 449 m/s.
  • drasnordrasnor Starship Operator Hawthorne, CA Icrontian
I topped out at 403 m/s before losing interest and making a KSP Falcon 9/Dragon. Affordable access to space!

My dream is that someone makes a mod (Or possibly becomes part of the stock parts) To build a ship similar in design to Project Orion.

There seems to be no limiting politics (May be in campaign who knows) and the magnetosphere doesn't seem to be a concern a nuclear pulse powered ship would be absolutely incredible.

(It would also open the possibilities of visiting other star systems should the KSP team every consider adding the ability)
  • drasnordrasnor Starship Operator Hawthorne, CA Icrontian
Nuclear pulse ascent would be for the lulz. Nuclear thermal engine is in the stock parts though as NERVA.

So, while you weenies called it a night, the following happened:

    image

and not to be outdone by Jeb, he rode the rocket all the way back home

    image

    Popped off on impact

    and stuck the landing:

    Man, look at this beast!

So, I *finally* got this beast assembled.

    image

So, now I want to go here:

    image

    The plan goes like this:

    1) Launch 2.5x orange tank module (complete)
    2) Launch 1.5x orange tank + lander module (complete)
    3) Dock these two behemoths (complete) *note - this point took me about 5 attempts
    ----
    4) Burn for Jool intercept - *double check that resulting orbit is the proper direction this time*
    5) Normalize inclination during transfer
    6) Fine control burn for Jool aerobrake orbit (below 138,000m) *double DOUBLE check that resulting orbit is the proper direction this time*
    7) Set transfer orbit to Laythe
    8) Orbit Laythe
    9) Find suitable landing site for colony lander
    10) Successfully parachute / power land onto a tiny Island in the middle of an ocean planet

    What could go wrong?

New challenge, "The Kerbalnaut Farmer" for cheapest manned orbital flight, there and back. I have 8077 K$.
  • RyanFodderRyanFodder Detroit, MI Icrontian
    First Attempt: $9872
  • RyanFodderRyanFodder Detroit, MI Icrontian
    Second attempt: $5172

Side note: single stage to orbit / parachute landing.
side side note: there are mountains on kerbin that your parachute won't open on.

Been watching vids of this on YouTube, and all I can say about it is, to quote the greatest vampire in history:
That's one, one dead kerbin ah ah ah, two that's two dead kerbins ah ah ah.....

I'd like to see pics of $5172. I can't get to orbit that cheap...

Ah ha! $4447 with three stages to orbit.

$4597 - I am not sure where you got your last $150 from, but I can't fit a poodle in my design, and I'm getting bored of the challenge.

    The "North Korean Missile" challenge

Build and fly this thing to cover the most "distance over ground" you can:

    image

1xCommand Pod Mk1, 5x solid fuel boosters, 4x hydraulic decouplers, boosters must fire continuously.

    My current record is 1.777,636m

    Edit: parachute optional
  • TushonTushon I'm scared, Coach Alexandria, VA Icrontian

    My current record is 1.777,636m

Edit: parachute optional unneeded. it's a missile

    typo on the distance?

    hahahaha that ending!

Dangit, I wish I knew how to into Kerbal.
  • RyanFodderRyanFodder Detroit, MI Icrontian
I now want to see how big of a structure I can permanently land on the moon.

Challenge? Most kerbals on the moon in a continuous structure?

Points for creativity? Fewest deaths (honor system)?

Story mode of how to get there?

I think I might award a credit if enough people are interested.

It puts itself into orbit when you take off. The creator has perfectly balanced vertical and horizontal thrust.

.... I can't keep the mainsails from overheating... that is impressive.
  • IlriyasIlriyas The Syrupy Canadian Toronto, Ontario Icrontian
I always put the mainsails into half thrust, they're so powerful that the lesser amount of force doesn't prove too much of an issue. (Even at half power they still have significantly more thrust ability than the second most powerful liquid fuel rocket.)

I've killed 4 Kerbals so far; my design has very little prop margin. I'm going to make it lighter tonight.

@Ilriyas, if you're not thrust-constrained on the Mainsails you might consider clustering smaller engines. It weighs less and their Isp is better.
