No. Less fragmentation.

OK, for those that do not get it... So, there is going to be more than one Prime...?

That appears to be the case. It looks like Verizon landed rights to have an exclusive variant of the Prime, but not to the exclusion of the authentic Nexus Prime on other carriers. Now, what those carriers are remains anyone's guess.

Remember those Verizon television ads where some synthisized voice would say "DROOOOID" ... that was Verizon building "Droid" brand equity and paying Mr. Lucas.

The "Prime" phones are just the first phones to feature Ice Cream Samich. Droid is Verizon's (likely / rumored), while the Nexus will be for other carriers.

Both will have the ice cream and the AMOLED.

I think the big significance is that Verizon customers will have a Ice Cream phone sooner than they thought but honestly I don't know.

Ice Cream Samich
Point of information: The correct technical term is sammich. Please make a note of it.

Also, this bodes well for The Yellow Carrier.

Updated rumor, from reputable sources this time:

1. Verizon version will be called Galaxy Nexus. It will launch at the end of October with ICS.

2. Other-carrier version will be called the Nexus Prime. It will launch a few weeks after #1, also with ICS.

Neither version has physical buttons beyond a volume rocker and power switch.

Other-carrier as in all of them, or unknown at this time?

Unknown, sir. Based on past evidence, perhaps T-Mobile first, AT&T a little behind, and Sprint ungodly late to the party.

A very interesting rumor has emerged. I'm not sure if I put 100% confidence in it, but it comes from a source that has been reputable in the past:

The Verizon Nexus will not have ICS. It may even be an Android 2.3.5 device with TouchWiz and carrier bloatware.

An even newer rumor being circulated:

Verizon will announce the DROID Prime in October, and it'll be the Verizon variant of the SGS2.

Meanwhile, the phone that everyone has calling the "Nexus Prime" will actually hit the streets as the Galaxy Nexus, and not on Verizon.

Galaxy Nexus? Samsung would want another Galaxy branded phone hot on the heels of the SGS2?

Verizon without a Nexus? FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU

If that's the case, hopefully it'll be just as easy to root and install CyanogenMod as a real SGS2.

Of course, this is Verizon we're talking about...

They were content to let US carriers introduce four different versions of the Galaxy S, so I guess they don't really care, so long as it sells.

We'll see.

Were I a product manager, however, I'd cling to the Nexus Prime name like a champ. It has so much momentum for enthusiasts that I'd never let the first ICS phone out the door with any other name.

I look at it a little like this:

Verizon has a policy of putting LTE on every phone in their lineup. If it's a flagship phone, it hasn't hit the market without LTE since the Thunderbolt launched.

That presents something of a problem for our wunderphone, because nobody at Samsung is going to put an LTE radio in the stock device. It's not lucrative, because only a handful of carriers even offer LTE, and only one carrier has a decent deployment.

So, I would be willing to bet that whatever Verizon offers will not be the Droid some people are looking for.
