Is GIMPS worth the trouble?

I have had PCs on Folding@home for a long time, and that's all well and good, but today I was bored and looking around online at distributed computing projects. Aside from F@H, the one that caught my attention was the GIMPS one where they try to find huge Mersenne prime numbers.

Aside from mathematics nerds and their calculations, is this project of any real use to anyone? I kind of doubt it, I think I might stick to F@H, at least that has a chance of being useful to me at some point in time, maybe.

    There are reasons for finding large prime numbers, as they are useful in crytography, but I devote all of my spare cycles to F@H, because I think it will have the largest "bang" for the buck.

    To be honest I've never used GIMP. But I have tons of experience using Adobe Photoshop. It's the best IMO.
