Futuremark’s Hungribles released, named iPhone Game of the Week in 111 Countries

Futuremark’s Hungribles released, named iPhone Game of the Week in 111 Countries

Hungribles for iOSFuturemark Games Studios has published their second game.  Hungribles was released on Thursday for both the iPhone (3GS and 4), iPod Touch (3rd/4th gen) and iPad (both 1 and 2). It is also being promoted as game of the week in 111 countries.

Jaakko Haapasalo, Director of Futuremark Games Studio says, “We are ecstatic to see Hungribles, our first game for iPhone and iPad, featured as Game of the Week. We welcome all our new players and invite them to share their ideas for enhancing the game further on the Hungribles website.”

For those unfamiliar with Hungribles, it’s a skill-shot puzzle game for iOS devices.  Hungribles are tiny creatures with appetites large enough to create a sort of gravitational field around them. The game’s goal is to feed the Hungribles and make them happy. How? By using a glowing mushroom slingshot to launch purple foot pellets at them, of course.  Points (which lead to a 1-3 star rating) are scored by feeding the Hungribles in creative ways, mostly involving using the gravitational fields of other Hungribles as well as walls and other objects in each level. In case you’re having trouble visualizing this acid trip, the launch trailer is right here:

To help promote the game, Futuremark is also giving away free Hungribles promo codes on their Facebook page.  If you want to purchase the game, it’s $1.99 at the iTunes store.

If the Futuremark name isn’t familiar to you, its products certainly will be.  The company is responsible for the 3DMark and PCMark franchises used almost universally for testing system performance.  They are also the creators of the FPS space combat game Shattered Horizon.

On a personal note, I’ve been waiting for this game to come out since I first heard about it and saw a very early gameplay trailer. I spent a couple hours playing last night, and it is quite a lot of fun.  First impressions: it has the puzzle and slingshot nature of Angry Birds, the cute graphics and gameplay of Cut the Rope, and the physics that Shattered Horizon is known for. At $1.99 it definitely promises to provide long hours of inexpensive entertainment.  If you have an iOS device compatible with this game, I’d highly recommend it.

Garg First thing Futuremark has made for anything Apple, right?

I keep thinking studios will stop releasing things for iOS exclusively since Android now has the dominant marketshare, but I guess we're not quite there yet in the mindshare department.

primesuspect I got to hang out with Oliver Baltuch at E3 2011 (He's the CEO of Futuremark) and he said that if the iOS version sells well enough, there will be an Android version.

Yep, first Apple title for them.

Android may have the dominant phone marketshare, but they still have the Tablet market locked up. Both platforms combined mean Apple is still the biggest thing out there. IIRC, a study was done a while back that showed more iOS users were likely to buy an app than Android users. It's played out exactly that way for me. I have $0 invested in Android software on my Droid. I don't want to think about what that number is on my iPad.

Sledgehammer70 Its like Cut the Rope 2.0. Cool concept, hope they do well with it.
