It’s nearly time for the move into Detroit. Icrontic Headquarters (ICHQ) is moving for the first time since our inaugural 2004 Memorial Day meetup. We’ve hosted something like 32 official Icrontic events, including six of our major annual LAN / Expo events (out of nine total), between these walls. The number of informal weekend events in between them is uncountable.
Our new home will be in the quiet neighborhood of Woodbridge near the heart of Detroit. It defies the stereotypes of this city, gaining population and decreasing its crime rate as most of the city moves in the opposite direction. We’ll have tremendously more space, better neighbors, better location, and the building is classy as hell (an 1899 Queen Anne).
We started packing and organizing our non-essential stuff this week. Tonight, it was time to pack up the Icrontic artifacts strewn throughout the house for safekeeping. LAN T-shirts and badges, spare Expo swag, a Norwegian flag, license plates, a 1337 processor certificate, Christmas cards, the plaque from the inaugural LAN, and Shar-Pei artwork was carefully dusted off and separated from years of accumulated junk. It was all stacked neatly and fit snugly into a single large box. One box. After so many years, it’s a strange sight to behold.
The beer bottle collection (one of nearly every type of brew sampled at ICHQ since 2007 – approximately 200 bottles) was dusted and transported yesterday, along with some shelves and the Expo raffle jars. Tonight or tomorrow the rest of the Icrontic relics will join it. The material heart of our community will be in Detroit as our story marches onward.
