Star Trek Online becomes the latest MMO to switch to the Free-to-Play (F2P) model today.
The game takes place in 2409, which is 44 years after the events in Nemesis and 22 years after the destruction of Romulus as depicted in the latest Star Trek film.
Since launch, the game has only increased in depth and many things have been added. In August of 2011, Perfect World Games acquired Cryptic Studios from Atari and they immediately removed the hiring freeze imposed by Atari and hired new developers to ramp up for new content. You can now visit Earth and walk around Star Fleet Headquarters, and visit First City on Qo’noS. You can also now walk around your ship and see the Engineering Section, Bridge, Captain’s Ready Room, and Galley.

In my opinion, one of the best features of STO is that not only can you play the episodic content that is periodically released (currently three Feature Episode Series, with a fourth due out in February), but also the release of a Star Trek Online Foundry—where anyone can create their own quests and release them for the public to play through. With a huge Star Trek fanbase to draw from, the new content is basically endless. Who wants to join with me to protect the Federation from the Klingons, Borg and anyone else that threatens peace in the galaxy?
