Transmeta’s M8800 Efficeon Processor Powers Down

Transmeta has cut the power consumed by the TM8800 90-nanometer Efficeon processor in half at 1 GHz, according to David Ditzel, Transmeta’s vice chairman and chief technology officer. The first generation of the Efficeon processor consumed 7 watts of power at 1 GHz, but the new version of the processor uses only 3 watts of power at that speed, Ditzel said.

The TM8800 is ready for partners to use in ultraportable notebooks, thin clients, and embedded designs, Transmeta announced Tuesday at the Fall Processor Forum. The company has discussed the processor for several months but highlighted several details of the chip for the first time at the conference in San Jose, California. It is currently shipping the 1.6-GHz version of the new chip in two new notebooks from Sharp in Japan.

It may not be the fastest but you have to admit that is quite efficient power consumption. -KF

  2. 9 Mar 2005 ~ 5:52pm SGS This is supposed to be a lightweight CPU made for a lightweight platform. I wouldn't expect it be compiling VB code, ripping DVD's, and running Half-life 2 at the same time. C'mon people, put things in perspective. It's like trying to tow a trailer in a Ferrari. I think those Mebius and Muramasa laptop's are freakin cool. Having an Efficeon adds another level to it's appeal.
