Intel Quad Core In Q4

Intel Quad Core In Q4

In AMD’s and Intel’s massive game of Risk, Intel has taken another continent with it’s announcement to push their Quad core Line to Q4 of 2006. Quad-core processors “Kentsfield” on the desktop and “Clovertown” on the volume server side will be the big cannons for Intel this time around.

Going forward, Intel apparently isn’t slowing down and will increase the pressure on its rival AMD. On the high-end, Intel intends to extend its current lead in performance desktop computers and said that it will launch its quad-core processors (“Kentsfield” on the desktop and “Clovertown” on the volume server side) already in the fourth quarter of this year. Considering the fact that AMD intends to launch its 4×4 platform, which will enable enthusiast users to run two dual-core Athlon 64 processors on one motherboard, Intel could have 4-core platform available for the holiday season.

Lets wait and see what AMD has to say to this…

Garg Hopefully we'll have more multithreaded software to use all those cores someday.

Leonardo Four cores - one machine - awesome Folding rig. Can you say 4 X Double Gromacs on one PC simultaneously? ...or 4 of any work unit on one PC

airbornflght Or maybe, coders will decide to use all the cores, instead of still programming single threaded applications. bah. I say we abondone singlethreaded apps all together. Or you could make them backwards compatible, but probably too much trouble.

RWB I am pretty sure you can code programs to take advantage of however many cores are in the system dynamically. But some programs do not need more than one. I could imagine it now... your IM programs taking advantage of 8 cores!

Sure they could use the power. For their, uh, 4-D animated smileys!

Hells yeh, and they have a physics engine built into them, so you can throw them around and move them out of the way:D

are these based on the P4 architecture or something newer? Doesn't the FSB on a P4 get saturated very easily in the dual core models especially when running gromacs? I thought I heard something about that...
  9. GHoosdum
GHoosdum I'm pretty sure that these are Conroe based.
  10. airbornflght
airbornflght Yeh, I am almost certain they are made on the core 2 architecture, not based off of the p4. God forbid if they are.

P4 is dead. Elements of Netburst (it wasn't all bad) will live on, but not the P4 architecture. Finito.

Sledgehammer70 Intel still suffers from memory bottle necking as memory controller is not on die. Intel will loss the quad core performance crown... unless they do something about their memory controller.
  14. airbornflght
airbornflght Yeh, I have been reading about that, They dont have enough bandwidth to feed all four cores. While amd doesnt seem to be suffering.
  15. Sledgehammer70
Sledgehammer70 The intresting part will be when we see programs that will make use of these 4 cores... man i can't wait until I can Box 4 versions of the same game :)

Because god knows that is what we need...you better grow six extra arms and some more eyes to handle all of those games.:cool2:

I was actually thinking of using four cores so that I can have all the AV stuff on one core, music and video on a another, and then just use the other two for whatever.

    Sledgehammer70 Actually I play L2 on 4 computers as is... 2 laptops and 2 towers. I am a 1 man raid :)
