   24 Jul 2006 ~ 3:14pm Leonardo AMD is not taking over ATI in order to compete with Nvidia. Sure, that may be one of the outcomes, but the whole purpose was to be able to continue to innovate, to find economies of scale, and to remain competitive for the long term.

   Yes I know this, But in all AMD has a huge side of ATI that competes with one of their main partners Nvidia, and it will be something to be addressed in the future.

   24 Jul 2006 ~ 5:39pm Leonardo Well, I can see your point. AMD Athlon never would have become mainstream if it weren't for Nvidia chipsets. VIA had made a lot of progress, but was eclipsed by Nvidia in both performance and reliability. That has been my only sore spot with AMD over the years - VIA chipsets.
   
   Maybe AMD figures that with in-house chipset manufacturing expertise, they won't need Nvidia after a while.

   24 Jul 2006 ~ 6:44pm Sledgehammer70 Well now news is saying AMD will keep the same channels open with Nvidia... but I think the real question will sit at Nvidia on how they want to treat AMD now that AMD will own their main Competition.

   24 Jul 2006 ~ 6:59pm airbornflght I thought that AMD bought ATI just for chipset development/fab plants, not to focus on producing video cards, It depends on what AMD does with ATI.

   TBH they would be smart to eliminate the workstation graphic cards and stick with just desktop offerings... But it will be intresting if AMD will push super high end cards...

   If they continue on making video solutions, I believe that they will focus on the value market, but then again, they may continue to manage themselves as they have and just be under one board of directors, as the Kmart/Sears merger went.
