For example, dropdown boxes (Select lists) are rendered currently with the OS, rather than as a form element by the browser.

   Previously, they were going to make web developers "opt in" to standards, meaning a lot of the web was going to be frozen in IE7's "reality" of rendering, which still has a decent way to go before catching up with Firefox et. al.
   
   We'd have to add markup to all our web pages to ask IE8 to do a better job, rather than it just doing so (like every other browser ever made... ever).
