AMD announces FireStream high performance stream processor

AMD today announced their new 55nm FireStream 9170 “science GPU”. This $2000 card will contain a GPU, 2gb of DDR3, and an accompanying SDK to develop stream code for the beast. With low power requirements, they claim that it is designed for high density, high performance computing and is capable of up to 500 GFLOPs per card.

We here at ICHQ highly doubt you’ll be seeing one of these sold as a gaming card. Now, if anyone wants to shell out $2K for a dedicated folding card, let us know, and we’ll offer you all the moral support that we can.

Leonardo AMD pressroom? Hmm, still worthless, until independent hardware reviewers have it in their hand.

drasnor This thing would be nice for the next time I have to write some highly parallel finite element code for analyzing some huge system.

Qeldroma Actually, I think that many of the technologies used here may find its way into the mainstream. Niche and specialized markets can make a great testbed.
