Another day, another Windows 7 build (7070)

Another day, another Windows 7 build (7070)

While build 7068 hit the intertorrents just three days ago, another build has already tipped up in the form of 7070.winmain.090324-1853, which is Windows 7 build 7070. It has a compile date of March 24, 2009 at 6:53 PM. The build was first sighted on the Facepunch Studios board where the original poster claimed his father works for Microsoft. While claims of this sort would normally be a load of crap, the poster did produce several very authentic screenshots that give us no cause to believe they’re anything but real. Unfortunately, the original poster also seems to be in a load of doodoo because the shots disappeared almost as quickly as they were posted. OOPS. Here’s a cap for your viewing pleasure:

Windows 7 Build 7070? FOR SRS?

Windows 7 Build 7070? FOR SRS?

In other news, it appears that this is just one of four post-7068 builds which include 7069, 7071 and 7072. The last of the bunch, build 7072, has a build string of 6.1.7072.0.winmain.090327-1845, which makes for a compile date of March 27, 2009 at 6:45 PM.

You can bet your cookies that one of these four builds is primed for a leak. And, on that note, is anyone beginning to suspect that Microsoft is doing this deliberately? There has been no clamp down, the leaked builds have been ones that contain major updates, we always get both x86 and x64 flavors, and they’ve been quite frequent. Bets?

Snarkasm /me is ok with it if they're leaks...

mertesn No doubt the leaks are approved. Microsoft has found starting with the official beta version that every "leak" has generated more positive buzz for Windows 7 - quite an improvement over Vista's reception. These "leaks" have probably led to more future sales of 7 than anything else could have.

Almost all software leaks on the Internet are approved by the original software maker, albeit unofficially. It's just one of the ways test the waters, but without attribution.
