AT&T Nexus One now for sale, Verizon in the spring

After months of harvesting anonymous FCC reports to determine Google’s plans for the Nexus One, the web giant today announced that the Nexus One is now available for AT&T complete with 3G service.

Nothing has changed between the T-Mobile and AT&T editions save the 3G radio, which has been swapped over to an AT&T-compatible 850/1900/2100MHz chip. Despite support for AT&T, however, Google does not appear to have recruited support from the carrier in the form of cost subsidies. While T-Mobile has opted to subsidize the price down to $179 over the life of a two-year contract, Nexus One hopefuls on AT&T must pay the handset’s full list price of $529.

In addition to unveiling a Nexus One ready for AT&T, Google has also confirmed that it’s working with HTC to prepare a CDMA version of the handset for Verizon. Though the exact launch date is unknown, the Nexus One’s order page confirms that it will be for sale some time this spring.

Kwitko Android-based phone on AT&T. Do not want. What's the point of using Android if you're going to strip out all the Google apps? And installing 1.5? And limited apps to the Android store?

Thrax Though this is implied by direct-to-consumer sales, I want to make it clear: AT&T (and T-Mobile, and Verizon) had no hand in the firmware for the Nexus One. It is a bog standard Android 2.1 ROM.

Kwitko My mistake. I confused the Nexus with the Droid. I'm blinded by ATTrage. But I guess for an unlocked phone it's not so bad.

It should be noted that because Google is selling this item directly to consumers, AT&T simply provides the contract and the pipe. They did not modify this phone.

They will also likely be loathe to give any support outside of anything that can be directly proven to be network related.

AT&T is not subsidizing the device, nor selling it, so they're able to wash their hands and say 'Sorry, not a supported device' if they come up against a support issue they're not able to address easily.
