AT&T: Users take too many cookies from the bandwidth jar

Beset with dropped calls, delayed messaging, and many other customer complaints, the much-besmirched AT&T appears to have finally found a solution to the congestion issues that have plagued its network: They’re going to throttle the amount of bandwith that users recieve.

AT&T appears to believe that all of their users, or at least the ones with smart phones, are naughty little data hogs. To combat this and improve service for the users that don’t use so much data, AT&T will be implementing usage-based pricing for data.  Their goal is to get consumers to “reduce or modify their usage.”

att_sucks

“We need to educate the customer … We’ve got to get them to understand what represents a megabyte of data,” said head of consumer services Ralph de la Vega. “We’re improving all our systems to let consumers get real-time information on their data usage.”

De la Vega went on to say that AT&T had the fastest 3G network in the U.S., and it was greedy smart phone users in Los Angeles and New York that were ruining the fun for everyone.  Apparently 3% of smart phone users use 40% of AT&T’s bandwith, with much of it going to audio and video streaming.

Information has not been released on when or how usage-based data pricing would go into effect, but it is said to be “inevitable.”

timuchan Networks should have to have the same policy as casinos, they need to be able to make good on their offers. Internet and wireless alike, if I pay for x bandwidth, I expect to have it available 24/7 - if they can't, they're overextending themselves and need to revise their offers.

    Thrax Dear AT&T,

You already charge $50 a month for a bandwidth cap of 5GB. If you are not prepared to offer 5GB, then you never should have configured your contract in this fashion. Please stop disguising the miserable nature of your network with crude excuses and incendiary accusations.

    Love,
An AT&T user that is bailing on your network as soon as possible

timuchan Also, Droid FTW. I got my firmware update today, went night and smooth... new slate theme on some of my apps is a nice touch.
  5. Thrax
Thrax Droid FTW indeed. The device just got rooted. Cyanogen and pinch to zoom here we come!

Kwitko /me looks back on his decision to switch the whole family over to AT&T from VZW with disgust.

timuchan @Thrax "And there was much rejoicing..."

    yaaay.

But no, I'm totally excited about the root abilities. Hack-ability is one of the top things I look for in my electronics. I hacked the crap out of the Razr I had before - I was long due for a new phone when I started hearing rumors of the Sholes/Tao/Droid. Love it! ^__^

MachineDog @thracks Pinch to zoom has been available with the dolphin browser on the market for a week or so. Just got my droid last night, exceptionally happy. This screen playing HD movies scaled to 848x480 is mindblowing. It is also from my tests much faster than my ipod touch 2g in the browser (on wifi). Speaker is, as reviews have noted, stupidly loud and clear for a phone. Just sitting waiting for some custom roms right now.

Pinch to zoom is a useful gesture that has its place throughout the entire phone, not just the browser. I'm aware that Dolphin offers the feature.

MachineDog Ah, having multi-touch in other parts will be nice, true.

.. or the customer needs to educate you by taking their money elsewhere.
  15. photodude
photodude more reasons I'm glad I'm not on the ATT band wagon. I was going to get a smartphone once, but the required data plans are expensive and provide low quality speed for the price. (why can't I just have a smart phone without the data plan...I wanted an omnia because it did wifi but I still had to pay for the data plan I would almost never use)

I wonder how many users are taking too many cookies out of the jar with Verizon now that they have droid, and lots of people getting the droid?

Or what about sprints so called 4G network?

Despite the fact that the Droid has been rooted, Cyanogen will not run on it. Sorry Thrax. It only has the hardware support for the G1 and the myTouch and Cyanogen has said that unless he magically obtains a Droid somehow he won't be able to port it to the phone. Also, pinch and zoom on Cyanogen only works in the browser (that I've noticed anyway).

    lol, somebody talking about Sprint.

So the story on multitouch is supposed to be that Google won't do it because they're not interested (for whatever reasons) in messing with Apple's patents, but because it's open, people can code their own versions of anything and add whatever gesture support they'd like. HTC did this with Sense - they recoded and replaced the default browser, so it supports pinch zoom and text resizing, as well as the pictures browser and a couple of other places. In theory, the Droid could get it if others did the same - or people will just port Sense to the Droid like they've been doing with other phones.

I haven't done any research of my own but I've also heard the patent excuse is complete nonsense and that apple doesn't own anything that would prevent the implementation. Palm has multitouch, right? I think its just something that hasn't been implemented yet.

You are incorrect sir. Apple owns the patent on multi-touch (which is a load of crap and proof that our patent system is too easy to abuse). The multi touch code is actually built into the vanilla Android kernel, however for a long time it was commented out because of the Apple patent. The multi touch code was then released in the 1.6 update (for the G1 and myTouch at least, not sure about any of the other phones).

As for Palm, they also sync with iTunes despite Apple telling them they aren't allowed to and violate the USB standard to do so last I checked.
  21. NiGHTS
NiGHTS Point is moot anyway, "Milestone" (Droid in Europe) supports multitouch throughout the device.

Palm Pre has it implemented, as well.
