A crippling network error on Sony’s PlayStation Network has rendered all non-Slim PlayStation 3s unable to connect for online play.
According to various reports, the 8001050F error stems from an issue in the way the PS3 handles leap year calculations. This supposition bears out, as PlayStation calendars across the globe today reset to 31 December, 1999 or 1 January, 2000, rather than March 1, 2010 as expected.
The bigger problem, however, is that affected consoles cannot get online until a fix is issued. Afflicted PlayStation 3s cannot connect to the PlayStation Network, and users have reported corrupt Trophy data.
Sony is aware of the issue and has posted a blog update, which reads, “We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.”
“We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.”
