The reporters of the tech industry are up in arms as rumors of mass layoff at Yahoo were confirmed. Analysts estimate that between 10-20% of the workforce will get the axe in 2008, affecting 1,400-2,800 people. Although sure to be reported as a bubble-esque indicator of weakness in the tech sector, compnies like Yahoo periodically have to do such purging of redundant personnel, a side effect of mass acquisitions of smaller companies. via Mashable Add comment
Time Warner, the same company that has announced plans to charge overage fees to "heavy users", has just announced that it will now be offering free streaming HBO content. So let's get this straight. Free streaming HBO, but overage fees for bandwidth usages from the same company. Kthx. The alternative here is if they choose not to charge overages for their own content, a blatant slam to Network Neutrality, which Comcast currently is learning about from the Justice Dept. Add comment

An anti-spam activist has lost a case in which publicly-available DNS records for a well-known spammer were published. The Judge has fined the anti-spammer US$60,000 for "hacking", plus lawyers fees, for looking up the domain name of the spammer and re-publishing the public registration information. For those who aren't familiar with DNS, this is like being sued by someone for looking them up in the phonebook and "making their personal information known" by re-publishing the data. However, this case is even more ludicrous, as the data being published was supplied by the spammer when they purchased the domain name. via The Register Add comment
"We are not going to attack anyone, but we believe all our partners in the international community should understand clearly and have no doubts that, in order to protect its and its allies' sovereignty and territorial integrity, Russia will use its armed forces, including nuclear weapons, and it can do it preemptively," Baluyevsky said at a scientific conference in Moscow. via Interfax Add comment
