Crytek, the wonderful purveyors of bleeding edge computer graphics, are once again preparing to push the envelope a little further. The newest incarnation of their famed CryEngine, now in its third version, will implement stereoscopic 3D technology. Crytek is set to debut this technology at the 2010 GDC conference later this month.
Stereoscopic 3D is the most recent trend to take the many facets of entertainment media by storm. From broadcast television to films, everyone is trying to get a piece of the 3D pie. While stereo is quickly becoming well established in cinema, the technology is still in its infancy in the gaming industry. CryEngine 3, in stereo, will mark the first time that an established developer has backed the technology, and its inclusion into a major engine like CryEngine 3 ensures a broad cross-platform exposure to 3D. Such a boost may finally be the vessel that pushes stereo in games to the forefront.
CryEngine 3 is being developed as a true multi-platform solution for the creation of next-gen HD games. Harnessing the incredible technologies that CryEngine 2 introduced the the PC platform, CryEngine 3 will allow simultaneous development across the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms. Utilizing a feature dubbed LiveCreate, developers will be able to see and play their results in real-time on all three platforms from a single editor.
