Any individual who has kept a watchful eye on the processor market knows that AMD is struggling to right their course. Recent — and sizeable — cuts to their workforce, trailing sales, under-performing x86 architecture and little palpable response to the Atom has left AMD a day late and a dollar short.

It comes as no surprise that Hector Ruiz stepped down today, having been at the helm amidst AMD’s long and agonizing decline into a distant second. Such a move has been rumored for quite some time, though they were dismissed at a December ’07 analyst meeting.
AMD has given the nod to the COO and President of AMD, Dirk Meyer. While AMD continues its downward spiral, Hector Ruiz will stay on the board as an executive chairman.
