The Genuine quality was introduced to the Team Fortress 2’s Mann-conomy in February of 2011 to distinguish items acquired by players participating in cross-game promotions, most commonly preorders. The first such items were the Genuine Sun-On-A-Stick and Genuine Sharpened Volcano Fragment for players that preordered the game RIFT before March 1st, 2011. Offering Genuine items for a game is mutually beneficial to both the game developers and Valve because the items help sway players to buy the game on Steam, and there are Genuine item collectors that will even buy the game solely for the TF2 items. There are a couple of deals available right now that would net you some cool games, extra DLC and some nice Genuine items in TF2.
Sleeping Dogs
Based on the description of this single player, open world game, Sleeping Dogs definitely earns its M rating from the ESRB. Check out CB Droege’s preview of Sleeping Dogs, including over an hour of game play. Valve is offering any players who preorder the game on Steam 10% off along with the Triad Enforcer Pack DLC and The Triad Pack in TF2. The Triad Enforcer Pack includes new weapons, a vehicle with matching outfit and two all new missions. All eight items included in The Triad Pack for TF2—half which are weapons—are given Genuine quality.
- Neon Annihilator – A melee weapon, designed like a Chinese bar sign ripped out of a wall, finally gives Pyro class enthusiasts a viable option for doing damage under water with a 100% critical chance on wet players. The same critical chance is awarded to hits on players covered in Mad Milk or Jarate. The balance to this is that it will never critical hit otherwise and does 20% less damage to dry players than the default fire axe.
- Huo Long Heatmaker – This Heavy class minigun replacement’s name translates to Dragon Fire Heatmaker. While the spin up time and firing damage is the same as the default minigun, the Heatmaker produces a ring of fire around the Heavy whenever spun up. This feature lights nearby opponents on fire but chews threw ammo at a rate of 6 per second.
- Flying Guillotine – As it is a giant butchers knife, you may expect this to be a Scout class melee weapon, but it’s actually a pistol (secondary) replacement. You throw the Guillotine, causing players to bleed on hit. Throw from far enough away, and it will mini-crit. On top of that, if the opponent is stunned, then you are awarded 100% critical hit.
- Red-Tape Recorder – The first ever sapper replacement. The Recorder doesn’t actually damage buildings. Rather, it reverts a building’s levels at half the speed they normally upgrade at. If a level one is successfully recorded it turns into a large ammo pickup.
- Human Cannonball – An all-class crash helmet with three styles. Crash style is team colored with a white racing stripe. Burn style adds Chinese dragon decals to both sides and Override style adds skater style decals.
- Triad Trinket – This multi-class miscellaneous replaces the Engineer, Heavy, Scout, Sniper or Spy’s shirt and adds a gold chain.
- Champ Stamp – A multi-class Chinese dragon tattoo for the Engineer, Heavy, Scout or Sniper.
- Marxman – All-class Groucho Glasses. It was only a matter of time.
The 10% off deal, Genuine Triad Pack items and Triad Enforcer DLC are available with the Sleeping Dogs preorder at the Steam Store until August 14th when the game is released.
Awesomenauts
Awesomenauts is a futuristic 3 vs. 3 platforming shooter with 80’s cartoon styling. It was released on PC on August 1st after being on XBL and PSN since May. Valve is offering three Genuine-quality Awesomenaut-inspired TF2 items to anyone who purchases the game through Steam before September 5th.
- Lone Star – A Sheriff-style hat with facial hair for the Sniper class. The facial hair is blue in the default Blu-team version and can be painted with any of TF2’s thirty available paints.
- Russian Rocketeer – This miscellaneous item for the Pyro class is a jet pack designed after the one used by the Awesomenauts character Yuri.
- Awesomenauts Badge – This badge is a gold version of the Awesomenauts 10th Prestige logo and can be worn by all classes.
Grab Awesomenauts for $10 on Steam before September 5th to get the three Genuine items in TF2. You and two friends can go in on a three-pack bringing the price to just $6.66 each. The hilarity of a paintable Sniper mustache is probably worth that alone.
