IE8 passes important test

IE8 passes important test

The Acid2 test is an important step in the development of a browser. It’s an unofficially official test that stresses the compliance of the browser to accepted HTML and CSS standards. To date, no version of Internet Explorer has succeeded in this test, while most alternative browsers have been passing for years.

With a beta expected in the first half of 2008, Internet Explorer 8 has passed the test and is moving forward with a focus on standards compliance. The major challenge for the IE dev team will be supporting the broken legacy rendering levied by IE6 while looking to the future with a standardized internet.

The final version is quite a long way off, and all good things are subject to change, but the birth of IE’s newest iteration is a happy one.

Leonardo I'm impressed, but I'm also tempted to say, "So, what's the catch?" Maybe it really is no more and no less than it simply will pass the standards test. If true, that really is good news.

Zuntar They'll bloat it out, don't worry.

I'm inclined to believe that's what it is. Molly Holzschlag, standardista-extraordinaire, has the insider's view as a community representative to Microsoft.

jared Wow, I met Molly at the Webmaster Jam Session this summer... that is one crazy lady. If anyone has an obsession... err I mean passion about standards it is her.

Passing Acid2 is a important step but they are still years behind the curve here. Of course this is MS we are talking about so I guess that shouldn't be a surprise.

Leonardo The Firefox wizards are hoping to have version 3.0 pass.

Snarkasm Opera correctly renders, as it almost always has. Also, there was a bug in the Acid2 test itself where it incorrectly returned a 200 error instead of a 404 or something, and if it's still broken, that might be why Firefox is failing it at the moment.
