We’ll update this post as we get information.

Update 1: SCEI President and CEO, Andy House takes the stage. “The stakes are high for what we’re going to show you”

Update 2:  Andy House said,  “We have an unwavering commitment to phenomenal play experience….We’ll continue to unlock PS Vita potential”

Update 3: PlayStation 4 is now confirmed!

Update 4: Lead System Architect, Mark Cerny takes the stage. Marble Madness ftw.

Update 5:

Sony Presser

Update 6: Dual Shock 4

Dual Shock 4

Update 7: First PlayStation 4 game announced called Knack.

Knack

Update 8: PlayStation 4 will have many ways to social with your real life and online friends. But no more avatars??

Update 9: David Perry, CEO of Gaikai takes the stage. PlayStation Cloud?

Update 10: David Perry, “Our goal is to make free exploration possible for virtually any PS4 game on PlayStation Store.

Update 11: GaiKai + PSN with instant access to games and broadcasting in real time comments from friends.

Update 12: Remote Play will enable Ps4 games playable on PS Vita.

Update 13: No backward compatibilities for PS4. They are working on the ability to stream titles from PSOne, PS2, PS3, ect. Well….hmmm

Update 14: Killzone: Shadowfold announced.

Killzone

Update 15: Killzone: Call of Game

Update 16: Drive Club, conceived almost 10 years ago, is here. Driving/racing simulation. The guy on stage is super enthusiastic, and you can tell he loves his game. Asynchronous and real-time competitive group racing. For the first time this entire presentation, I’m actually impressed with the realism of the technology… And it’s a racing game.

Update 17: Using security and political stuff to sell a game is… eh… inFamous Second Son announced.

Update 18: Sony remains committed to indie devs. Jonathan Blow on stage to announce his new game “The Witness”. The music is enchanting. Makes me realize that music can still sell, make, or break a game for me.

Update 19: “We’re so edgy. We showed you murderkilldeath zone with graphicblood deathface technology, and then some artsy-fartsy crap like The Whats-it-called! Check us out!”

Update 20: Capcom takes the stage to talk about their next-gen “Panta Rhei” engine, and working title Deep Down, which looks Skyrim-esque.

Update 21: Square Enix takes the stage to show a real-time cinematic running on PlayStation 4. It looks like it could be any generic Square Enix fantasy game, featuring modern tech such as guns and trucks as well as dragons and magic… It looked incredible, in a cinematic fashion only Square Enix can pull off. The graphics are very impressive.

Update 22: Shinji Hashimoto, brand director for Final Fantasy, takes the stage: “I have just one thing to say… We are preparing development for our new Final Fantasy title. Please be at E3 this year”. What we saw in the previous demo was probably Final Fantasy XV.

Update 23: Ubisoft takes the stage. This is another one of those weird bizarro presentations where you ask yourself, “What the hell is going on right now…” They’re showing Watchdogs, but they’re rambling about connectivity and phones or something? Anyways, Watch Dogs looks actually really awesome. Sort of Assassin’s Creed but you’re some sort of electro-vigilante with limitless electronic surveillance powers and the world’s coolest smartphone?

Update 24: Blizzard takes the stage….? They’re bringing Diablo III to the PS4 AND the PS3. A collective “meh” just exploded on Twitter.

Update 25: Activision takes the stage. Announcing Bungie-developed “Destiny” coming to PS4. A new FPS in a new universe.

And that’s that. No price. No release date. No specs. No actual physical console. Enjoy!

primesuspect Let me paraphrase: "Cell was fucking crazy and developers hated it. The PS4 will be, basically, a PC"
  2. timuchan
timuchan Sounds like a PS3 with a usable network for multiplayer. I hope. Only other thing I really felt the PS3 suffered from was the controller. I loved it... until I spent a few hours in a shooter on the Xbox 360. Doesn't look like they will change that though. Maybe Razer can make one.
  3. CyrixInstead
CyrixInstead What is the quality like on top-spec PC games these days? Those PS4 graphics look simply awesome - have I been out of the games loop for that long, or are those graphics really that good?
  4. primesuspect
primesuspect You've been out that long. They're better on PC now.
  5. Thrax
    Thrax PCs are better, imo:
  6. RWB
RWB With the CPU being an X86 based processor do you think we will see more games ported from console to PC since it has similar architecture?
  7. Thrax
Thrax Yes. And it also reduces the likelihood that the port will be shoddy, since you're no longer switching CPU ISAs or graphics APIs in doing the port.
  8. RahnalH102
RahnalH102 "We're happy to announce that -" [sound cuts out video keep playing] DAMMIT!
  9. fatcat
fatcat so why couldn't they announce the actual hardware?

    "GUYS THE PS4 HAS A 8-CORE 223MMX AND ATI RAGE 4MB!"

  10. BHHammy
BHHammy I REALLY think Blizzard is wasting their time and everyone else's by bringing Diablo 3 onto the system, but that's just me, I guess.

Am I the only person that immediately tuned out the moment Jason Jones stepped on stage? I still have no interest in anything he has to say after that garbage he was talking, previous.

    Plus, Destiny looks like crap.

Watch Dogs, though...I swear, that game almost sells the damn thing for me, itself. I -HAVE- to play that game.
  11. primesuspect
primesuspect I pretty much agree exactly with you @BHHammy

    No.

With the CPU being an X86 based processor do you think we will see more games ported from console to PC since it has similar architecture?
I would say yes on a technical level, but the flagship Sony games are going to be kept on the Playstation platform so that more Playstations are sold and eventually more games for it. It would be bad business for them to port their brands to PC if they own a platform. Sort of like Apply porting iMovie to PC.
  15. Thrax
Thrax Exclusives are pretty much dead. I think the PS3 lost every single PlayStation exclusive the brand ever had.
  16. PirateNinja

Exclusives are pretty much dead. I think the PS3 lost every single PlayStation exclusive the brand ever had.
I don't know anything about Sony :( All I can remember about them is that guy named Snake from some promo video I saw years ago.

    Edit:

So is the PS4 just a highly target budget gaming PC with an easy to use OS? I'm confused at the differentiation.
  17. Thrax
Thrax Devs hold all the power when it comes to games. Sony pays for exclusivity, not vice versa. It's not generally in the dev's business interests to go exclusive, and that's increasingly true in today's market.
  18. PirateNinja
PirateNinja I assumed Sony had some in house IP much like Nintendo that people drool over. I would never, for example, buy a wiiu if it didn't mean more zelda and mario but just a slightly different experience for the other 5000 games.
  19. Thrax
Thrax AFAIK they do, but generally speaking it's third-party titles that go on to be superstars in the Xbox/PS world.
  20. primesuspect
primesuspect There will be PS4 exclusives: Knack, Killzone, Uncharted, etc.
  21. _k
_k Considering the 36 has 162 exclusive titles and ps3 has 147 exclusive titles currently, quick wiki check so not extreme accuracy, there are still a large section of the market that they hold in sway. Yes both companies pay to have titles be an exclusive launch but they are also the gate keeper on the developers.

x86 processor and something that might resemble a computer architectures is pointless unless the APIs are worth a damn.
  22. Thrax
Thrax You're Sony. You need games to survive. Developers have the final say as to whether or not a game gets made for your system. Your system architecture now shares every single component with a PC, down to the ISA of the GPU and the CPU. Those developers will want to go cross-platform to maximize sales.

How good do you think the API is? How close to a PC?
  23. _k
_k Not that good given the past decade of sony and not very close to a PC because they are producing a console which is far from open source or even public knowledge. Sony is a company that does not want to even sell SDKs to someone who they do not see making them money short and long term with content. Simply having some capital, liquid assets to pay them, and some sort of company is not enough. You have to pay them a lot of money simply to gain access.
  24. Chooch
  25. Thrax
Thrax And there it is. It's a PC in a box.
  26. _k

  33. lmorchard
lmorchard Isn't this basically the same concept as the original Xbox? That is, a small gaming PC with decent graphics you hook up to your TV? (I ask, because it makes me chuckle to think it might have come full circle and swapped companies.)

Backwards compatibility will eventually come...sort of. The purchase of Gaikai will eventually bring a streaming service. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see the entire Sony console catalog eventually come to the service. It's the "backward compatibility" of the future.
  38. primesuspect
primesuspect Hmmm. A 64-bit Jaguar... Where have we seen that before?

    CyrixInstead My thoughts exactly Prime!!

And thank for the video Thrax, I don't know anybody with a decent gaming rig, and I've been stuck in Wii land for the last few years. I've seen screenshots of Crysis 3 but not bothered with any video.

One of the biggest things for me is that people move much more realistically now.
  40. Linc
    Linc
so why couldn't they announce the actual hardware?
Because they were announcing vaporware. It's the cool thing to do.
  41. primesuspect
primesuspect It's hardly Vaporware. It definitely exists, they probably are waiting for E3 to reveal the shell because the design may not be final yet.
  42. primesuspect
primesuspect I have to admit the CPU and GPU are far more modern than I had expected them to be. This is actually close to a current gaming PC, with the exception of the absurd 8gb of unified GDDR5 RAM. That's insane.
  43. primesuspect
primesuspect The question will be: with a 10 year expected lifecycle, will the PS4 be capable of 60fps 4K gaming?
  44. Thrax
Thrax No, because there isn't a graphics chip on earth that can do it.

4k @ 30 fps? Maybe for some games.
  45. NiGHTS
NiGHTS Worth noting that the native 1080p support from current gen consoles was somewhat lackluster, IMO. Though, I think what you're getting at is more the idea of pushing a new standard, which I agree and have no problem with.

With regard to exclusivity - from an outside perspective - it seems less and less likely that a developer would want to move in that route if for nothing else but the general idea that competitors seem to be more likely to be able to create a noteworthy 'competitor' or alternative to their game, these days.

A good example from the PS3 perspective is GT v. Forza.

Easy to think of it as Publisher X notices Publisher Y's got great success with Title A, begins seeking and bankrolling publisher Z to develop Title B, which is very similar. However, there are some great PS3 exclusives that I cannot see Sony allowing to move to other consoles - still a bit of a stalemate.
  46. Cliff_Forster
Cliff_Forster 4K is sweet, but it will not gain acceptance at home during the PS4's life cycle. It's current application is going to be huge screens in public venues digital movie theater projection. 1080P will be perfectly fine for home consumers for the foreseeable future. (FYI, I'm always right about consumer electronics, seriously, don't argue, I'll just come back to this thread five years from now and laugh at you).

People are choosing convenience over quality. HDTV took off when light easy to move flat screens with multiple HDMI hook ups became affordable. Smaller footprint, less wires, that's what consumers see as value. More resolution? It will be impossible to sell at home. I know guys that will tell you they can't tell the difference between DVD and Blu Ray, and they are being sincere, they just don't get it. Trust me 99.5% of the market will continue to be perfectly pleased with 1080P beaming into their homes. People will not replace current models for more resolution on a 42" screen. What might work? Good wireless connectivity to all your devices. That's a convenience feature, people will understand the value and pay for that. More HD than HD? Not gonna sell. It has it's place, it's just not at home, not anytime in the PS4's life-cycle anyway.
  47. PirateNinja
PirateNinja Nobody knows exactly what will happen but my opinion is that soon as h265 is well adopted 4k will absolutely be in everyone's living rooms. My guess is we are about 2 years away from seeing 4k tvs in the stores. I'll come back on this thread in 2 years and check.
  48. mertesn
mertesn Originally I thought 4K support would be mandatory for success, but I've changed my mind. 4K will be in the homes of enthusiasts with big wallets over the next five years, and big demand for that resolution of console gaming won't happen for a few years after that. I'd expect 4K gaming out of the PS5 with a very small number of 4K games for the PS4.
  49. Cliff_Forster
Cliff_Forster @PirateNinja - Flawless track record on consumer electronics predictions. I am the oracle. Seriously, my resume, flawless, if it's going to succeed or fail, I always get it right. I may be a geek, but I understand the every-man. 4K will not widely accepted in homes until the PS4 is on it's last leg.

See, here is the thing, you give people far too much credit if you think they actually value quality. That's why people cram a bunch of crappy Tailor Swift and Ke$ha .mp3 files onto their players. It's why McDonalds is the #1 fast food chain in the world. Quality does not matter, it's whatever people can get fast, cheap and easy. If a TV comes along that makes it easier to deliver a movie without getting up, bingo, you catered to the consumers desire for laziness. It's how people think. 4K, it won't matter, people won't care, it's just more HD than HD, what's it do for them, why will the spend more money for it? It's not going to happen, too many perfectly good 1080P TV's that have several years left on em. People are not going to replace them for quality. Now, you deliver a convenience feature, a feature that keeps fat asses from leaving the couch, a feature that makes it easier to hook up, people will be all over that.

4K will take off when all the first generation plasma and LCD's are ready to hit the landfills in about a decade.
  50. Linc
    Linc
    It's hardly Vaporware.
As in "software and hardware products that have been announced and advertised but are not yet available" nor will be imminently. I'm sure Sony will release the PS4, but clearly they don't have an actual product yet but rather a draft of one.
  51. Thrax
Thrax I think you're conflating the word "vaporware" with simple PR nebulousness. Vaporware implies that the product will never actually exist, e.g. the Phantom console that was eternally mired in developmental hell, if not outright lies.
  52. fatcat
fatcat we still only have 720p tv service (or 1080i shit). it's 2013. the PS5 will be out before 4k is maintstream
  53. primesuspect
primesuspect They have everything but a physical shell. The unit exists, it will absolutely be released, there are already games for it. It's not vaporware by any stretch. They haven't unveiled the (relatively unimportant) physical box yet. Would a mock-up plastic shell make all the difference in the world? Not at all.
  54. Cliff_Forster
Cliff_Forster Let's face it, an eight core X86 APU with 1.84 Tflops of graphics processing power is going to need a little room to breathe. Hopefully Sony is run by by the engineers and not the marketing dept or we will have another clusterfuck like the Xbox 360 launch.

I'm sure they are still arguing over the footprint, that's why you have not seen the shell yet.
  55. primesuspect
primesuspect I fail to see how one of the best-selling consoles of all time is a "clusterfuck".

  60. Cliff_Forster
Cliff_Forster The Xbox 360 launch was a clusterfuck. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problems - Put in simple terms, the marketing dept wanted a pretty little white box, and any hardware engineer with any sense knew it was not going to allow enough space for the hardware to get sufficient cooling. Subsequent die shrinks solved a huge problem that could have been avoided with a slightly bigger footprint. If you remember the 360's coming out party was a MTV special with Elijah Wood (I shit you not). They showed the console, bragged about it's sexy reduced footprint compared to the monstrosity that was the original xbox well before release. They painted themselves into a corner. Come on, we have all had at least one red ring on us, I had several fail. It was a shit design, in other-words, a complete clusterfuck.

Sony is smart to take it's time, if the shell needs to go a little bigger and uglier, let's test it and release something that actually works, rather than make it the pretty little marketers dream. I'm sure they debate is raging at Sony now about how small and pretty they can practically make the shell. Sony, don't be a Microsoft.

Imagine an icrontic drive club night. cars. roads. and a bunch of shit talk ;)
Dude, I am SO IN for Icrontic Drive Club. Add bourbon and you have a legendary evening.

They didn't show the actual console because right now, it's basically hardware on a server rack. I saw pre-announce PS3 test units at THQ. Same spec as the retail PS3, just not optimized to fit in the space of the design shell and be cooled properly.

If they wanted to show us the PS4 right now, it would just look like 2 or 3 line boards on a server rack. They're going to wait for E3 to reveal the actual kit.

I think PS4 looks interesting. They showed off some nice game potential. I'm skeptical on how much of it was actually real talk footage and not bullshots, but I'm confident in the system's capabilities. I think it is very, very interesting that Sony led with Drive Club over GT though. Gran Turismo has been Sony's baby since PS1. We know GT5 didn't do so well, especially against Forza, so it looks like that honeymoon might be over.
  63. Cliff_Forster
Cliff_Forster If I looked like that I'd never leave the house.
  64. CrazyJoe
CrazyJoe I agree about Drive Club. I haven't been into many racing games, but the concept of that one looks fantastic. I might actually get a PS4 if this an other games become a reality of social gaming on Icrontic.

  67. QuadWhore
QuadWhore Drive club would be perfect. I've always loved and been great at racing games, and with it being on a friendly device such as a console (so couches = available and ready) I would be very down for IC night.
  68. BHHammy
BHHammy I don't even care for racing games, and Drive Club looks kind of sweet. Something that actually showcases an -experience- instead of just CARS RACING LOOK AT ALL OF THE SHINY. I can't identify with any of that other mess at all- but actually putting forth a "step into the driver's seat yourself" actual -experience- is much more easy to relate, even to someone who isn't into cars.

A sweet drop on the PS3 price. For a bundle, I suppose if you want a blu ray and an hd media streamer that doubles as a gaming machine, it's not a bad deal. I may actually pick on up.

    899.00 Australian Dollar = 927.19 US Dollar

original PS3 went for $499(20GB) and $599(60GB) when released in 2006

with today's inflation I totally expect it to be $699 or more, I mean this is Sony (have you seen the price on unlocked Sony cellphones?), not Google.
  76. UPSLynx
UPSLynx Yeah, I get that, but like Mert said, Sony will be shooting themselves in the head if they try to launch a console at that price. It will literally be over for them. They can't sustain that, not after the last couple of years they've had.

Besides, looking like a lot of those high end cloud functions won't even be available at launch. Sony exec calling them 'aspirational'. Sheesh, here we go.
