New Releases for The Week of Hells and Dimensional Ocarinas

Dungeon Siege III

Dungeon Siege III is the next iteration in the Dungeon Siege franchise, but unfortunately, it seems that it is not a successor. Dungeon Siege is about crawling through dungeons developing characters alongside your friends, and while this new game seems to have stuck with that basic premise, much else seems lost. Early reports, and experiences with the demo, show us that it is little more than a port from the consoles—and we all know what that means: The game has been severely dumbed down and focuses only on having pretty graphics, sacrificing much of what makes the gameplay great in the first two games. The most disappointing thing to hear is that the players must always stay on the same screen. If true, the game will not be playable for my regular co-op group.

F.3.A.R.

I personally don’t understand the appeal of F.3.A.R. or any of the games in this genre, but apparently there is a large sub-set of gamer who actually enhjoy it when their games startle them with abrupt noises and flashing lights accompanied by creepy music. It’s simultaniously boring and annoying, but I feel the same way about startle films, so I guess I’m not a good judge. Anyway, this third game in the F.E.A.R. franchise will add co-op play—local and online—and a new cover system. Also, it’s supposed to be scarier, so, you know, have fun with that…

Shadows of the Damned

Shadows of the Damned is a third-person shooter adventure game set in hell. Seems trite, but seemingly it was designed by some innovative guys and it does have some gimmicks. Chiefly, it seems that the character is friends with a shape-changing demon who turns himself into all the various tools and weapons the character needs. Sounds a bit like Boy and His Blob, actually. The official release note states that the gameplay will “will forever change the way gamers perceive puzzles, combat, and terror” but does not expand further, so I guess we’ll just have to see.

Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3D

The Icrontic spotlight this week glimmers off the grappleshot of  The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. I know it’s not a new game, but it’s Ocarina, and it’s been remastered, and 3Dified for the 3DS, so that’s pretty much the coolest release of the season.

primesuspect Premature trigger. Deleting the thread would cause more trouble than doing this kind of explaining.

CB Are you trying to say that F.E.A.R. is not the video game equivalent of a startle flick?
  8. _k
_k I believe you over indulged that analogy, Dead Space primarily uses that ploy so I believe it is viable in that situation. The physic hallucinations and scenes are rather jumpy but it is partly to show the fragmentation of "adult" Alma's mind. The startle is not used across all elements in FEAR and used in conjecture with other elements, normally visual with minor sound elements. I am playing through one of the FEAR expansions right now and do not find myself horrible startled but merely slightly scared in some areas trying to expect things and am startled when something unanticipated occurs.

All of this aside I think we should sit down while I play some FEAR and discuss it further with the source material present at EXPO. I didn't buy FEAR3 already so we could no view and discuss that sequel.

Sure. I'd like that if we find time. I have to admit my impression of the entire franchise is based upon the first five minutes of the demo of the first game. I couldn't play any further because being startled gives me an instant migrain. I've been assuming the entire series is akin to that five minutes.

CB Penny-Arcade well illustrated the issue with DSIII co-op, as their craft demands they do:
