New York Governor David Paterson has suggested a tax on internet downloads which would apply to anything from music to pornography. A spokesman from the Paterson administration indicated that the four percent tax would specifically apply to downloads of music, software, books, videos and other Internet content.
The idea has been broached as a method to help close $15 billion budget deficit. The tax has attracted the ire of other legislators, however, as the application of the tax to pornographic downloads essentially legitimizes their existence. This has irritated some of our dear friends in the ivory tower.
