NY to tax pr0n downloads

NY to tax pr0n downloads

And other data that doesn’t make for such a good headline

New York Governor David Paterson has suggested a tax on internet downloads which would apply to anything from music to pornography. A spokesman from the Paterson administration indicated that the four percent tax would specifically apply to downloads of music, software, books, videos and other Internet content.

The idea has been broached as a method to help close $15 billion budget deficit.  The tax has attracted the ire of other legislators, however, as the application of the tax to pornographic downloads essentially legitimizes their existence. This has irritated some of our dear friends in the ivory tower.

MiracleManS I'm just curious how this is going to work. Are they going to tax on "legitimate" downloads?

Why does this not sound like a good way to encourage the use of legitimate sources?

If it ISN'T just legitimate downloads, how the hell are they going to know? /wearstinfoilhat

Snarkasm All downloads, or just paid content downloads? Are they going to tax my Linux ISO torrents?

The latter wouldn't terribly surprise me, as WI has a "use tax" where they ask you to pay the sales tax you sidestepped by buying things online or out of state; this could be the same kind of thing.

    Either way, it's still awful.

Shorty I am curious as to what mechanism they are intending to implement to actually track this usage and charge it. What charging model are they intending to use? Price per pelvic bundled with number of participants x number of money shots?

Why would they approve a law that they don't know how to implement yet?
  11. Snarkasm
    Snarkasm Because it's Wisconsin?

They already have a friggin' "use tax" - where they ask you, when you fill out your state income tax papers, to go ahead and pay taxes on everything you bought online or out of state in the last year.

Go fvck yourself, WI. You don't deserve that money because you don't have ANYTHING WORTH BUYING HERE.
