Stardock is an incredible company. They just get it.
CEO Brad Wardell made a blog post regarding the piracy of Demigod. The game was reported heavily pirated at launch due to many different factors such as a broken matchmaking service and rough reviews as a result. This led many people to question one of the strongest arguments against piracy—that if a GOOD game is released without DRM, then people will buy it.
Yet Brad made this post about the game’s success, and why it has defeated piracy.
Demigod chimed in at third place for US PC game sales this past week according to Gamasutra. Brad mentions that this is a result of Demigod being a very good game, and Stardock having a fanbase that understands what their company is trying to do. Copy protection is messy and annoying, and Stardock offers their titles without the hassle. Brad reaffirmed his beliefs regarding piracy protection, and those beliefs were backed up by a very powerful weapon—the consumer’s dollar.
From Brad’s post:
The reality that most PC game publishers ignore is that there are people who buy games and people who don’t buy games. The focus of a business is to increase its sales. My job, as CEO of Stardock, is not to fight worldwide piracy no matter how much it aggravates me personally. My job is to maximize the sales of my product and service and I do that by focusing on the people who pay my salary—our customers.
And that is why Stardock is awesome.
