Rumor: HTC to release stereotypically female centered Android phone

HTC Logo

A year ago, we published a story about how frustrating using smartphones could be for women, considering that their size and shape weren’t created with small hands in mind. It appears that HTC may have noticed this fact, as a rumor going around says that it is manufacturing a smartphone for women called “Bliss.” There’s no news yet on the physical specs of the phone or when it might be released, but a few details have come out about what it might entail.

How it’s female oriented

“Bliss” is supposed to be seafoam green and comes with a rubberized back, allowing for a better grip on the phone. It’s apparently a mating of the HTC Desires S and Z, without a keyboard.  The green color is supposed to be “calming.” and the phone also comes with a soothing wallpaper to go along with it. “Bliss” will come tailored with shopping and calorie counting apps, and will most likely run the Sense UI.

The most interesting part of the new phone will be an accessory hanging off of it called a “charm indicator.” This charm can be clipped to a purse and will light up if the user has some sort of message waiting for them. Other available accessories will include a wireless charging dock with speakers, a “stylish” matching bluetooth headset,  and a square speaker that can be attached to a car visor and uses voice recognition.

My Reaction:

It’s exciting to see a phone company try to cater to the many female Android users out there, especially considering that the size of the average Android device can be hard for women to type with quickly. That being said, HTC is going about this largely in the wrong way. Why do women in particular need a rubberized back for grip purposes? If that helps users hold the phone, why not put it on every HTC phone so men can gain the advantage of it too? And why does the phone need to have a calming color and wallpaper? Is it because women might be tempted to throw it across the room when they realize that HTC thinks that they’re fat and need to start counting their calories?

While catering weight loss and shopping commercials to women is nothing new, it’s disappointing that such an innovative company like HTC feels that the most compelling way to get ladies into their phones are condescending features. Lastly, while the charm indicator could help women with big purses find their phones quickly, it seems like something more geared towards a fifteen year old—not the twenty to thirty something women that “Bliss” is marketed to. It could also be highly annoying  if it happened to get stuck on things easily, or for users that prefer to carry their phones in their pockets.

The “Bliss” phone is still a rumor, and it’s likely that it may never come out, or it may be heavily changed before it comes to market. Hopefully HTC will come up with some more compelling female-oriented features through field testing the phone, because it’s not impressing now.

  1. BobbyDigi
BobbyDigi Next step? Phones geared towards Men. Porn search and Fast Food finder apps preinstalled. Bluetooth watch included that displays notifications on the face. Other available accessories include wireless vibrating ring and HDMI doc for media.
  2. Tushon
Tushon The PR nightmare that would entail releasing a phone pre-loaded with a calorie-counting app makes this rumor seem rather unlikely. Digi's idea seems much more plausible :P
  3. _k
_k I would use a calorie counting app to help me eat more.
  4. Charshie
Charshie I would so buy Digi's man phone D: Porn and fast food at my fingertips? Hells yeah. Throw in a camera app that x-rays clothing and I'm sold.

Tushon Don't forget the portal gun
  6. drasnor
drasnor Slip an IR filter over your phone's camera and it can x-ray clothing just fine.
  7. fatcat
fatcat I thought cell phones were already centered towards females....

I haven't seen one with a leatherman or light-saber yet
  8. NiGHTS
NiGHTS In the most delicate of ways: I can see a huge target audience for this specific type of phone out here. I don't think midwestern women is what they were shooting for. I can't really see how someone could get that bent out of shape over the features, either.

Edit: Color choice is a huge issue with products, I'm betting that the green chosen gave more of a "calming" feel to the test group they gave the phones to. You could just as easily describe pink as "flashy, loud and attention grabbing" which would likely cause equal amounts of rage on the opposite end. We have a few product managers on the board, now, I'm sure they could clue us into more.
  9. Annes
Annes I would rock the fuck out of a green phone. A nice dock for an Android phone would be wicked, but other than those two things it's a solid "meh, who cares." If the hardware is good, it's not unsightly and it's carried by Sprint, I would think about it.

kanezfan If they don't put an automatic tampon dispenser on it, it will fail miserably.

Except for the vibrate motor, that will be top notch.

PirateNinja It isn't condesending to put a calorie counter on a phone when most of the target market count or want to count calories.

What is more deteriorating to women is that they have so little confidence that they would take offense by this.

Personally, this sounds perfect for me and I'm a male. Less the shopping app.
  16. Tushon
Tushon You clearly haven't been asked "does this make me look fat?"
  17. PirateNinja
PirateNinja I can't tell you how many times I've been asked that question in it's various forms, and that is my point exactly. Females need to be more confident; they're hot and they don't need to ask silly questions or get offended by apps that support healthy lifestyles.
  18. Tushon
Tushon I definitely see what you are saying, but do not think that is how most people will react :tim:
  19. NiGHTS
NiGHTS I can almost guarantee after numerous test groups/markets were polled, it was requested as a feature of the phone.

Truth. Are you also in marketing?
  21. NiGHTS
    NiGHTS No, accountant ;)

Very aware of how the business process works, though.
