SanDisk preparing to boost SSD storage by 50-100%

As SanDisk feverishly beavers away on a technology to boost SSD write performance by 100 fold, SanDisk Senior Director of Marketing Don Barnetson says that’s not enough. Speculation is growing that SanDisk intends to produce 3 and 4-bit MLC NAND cells which will increase NAND capacity by 50-100% over today’s 2-bit MLC solutions.

Exploration into 3 and 4-bit solutions reveals that increasing the bits stored in a single cell exponentially decreases the rewrite speed, which all SSDs must perform to store data. However, if SanDisk can successfully orchestrate this new technology with their ExtremeFFS technology, we could have a new leader in the SSD market over night.

As the new technology is expected to be revealed at CES in Las Vegas in January, Icrontic will be on hand to bring you live coverage of product details. Stay tuned!

Khaos Nice; between this and the memristor developments over at HP the future is looking very bright for solid state!
  2. Leonardo
Leonardo One thing that may take the SSD market into the mainstream is the glut of flash memory worldwide. There's actually much excess production capability, and much excess in production. Production outstripped demand months ago in nearly all categories of memory. Manufactures can't just shut down the fabs. For the most part, they have to keep them running. In the case of DRAM, much of it is being sold under manufacturing/distribution costs.

If I upgrade, I'm definitely keeping this in mind!
