The fifth installment into the legendary Civilization series was announced just moments ago. Developed by Firaxis Games, Sid Meier’s Civilization V will continue the nearly 20-year legacy of making strategy gamers play “one more turn”.
Developed by Sid Meier, the Civilization series is one of world domination, known for its deep strategy and addictive gameplay. Beginning with a single settler, players establish a colony, and later a civilization to stand the test of time. Gameplay revolves around diplomacy, expansion, discovery and war. Civilization V will expand on all of the features that fans of the series have come to love and expect.
As one of the features most central to Civilization, diplomacy has been improved for Civilization V, with additions such as control over city-states to create new diplomatic battlegrounds. New victory conditions are also being added to the game.
Combat has been souped up to be more engaging and immersive as well. Wars will now be massive in scope, with large armies stretching across the landscape. Civilization V will further introduce ranged bombardment, which will allow players to fire weapons from behind the front lines.
The new Civ’s multiplayer experience has also been given a dramatic overhaul. The game will feature online play via Internet, or by email, and will also have hotseat and LAN capabilities. Civilization V will also serve as an online hub for the communities of the game to share scenarios, scores and achievements. The new focus on social connectivity could add some exciting replayability to the game.
Finally, Civilization V will support modding. The game will ship with modding tools that, Firaxis promises, will empower players with the ability to modify the game in any way they wish.
Civilization V is currently in development, with a retail launch expected in the fall of this year.
