Skyrim gets a perfect score in Japan

Skyrim 40/40 on FamitsuAccording to computerandvideogames.com, Skyrim has done what games like Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, Modern Warfare 2 and 3 failed to do before it, becoming the first Western game—and only 17th title of all time—to receive a 40/40 score in Japan’s most popular and prominent gaming magazine, Famitsu. Skyrim now joins games like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy XII, and Nintendogs.

This is interesting because Skyrim has had a lot of technical issues. If you are playing Skyrim on the PlayStation 3, you have received a patch to fix many of the issues, but PC and Xbox 360 gamers will have to wait until Wednesday for the patch. Here are the full patch notes.

  • Improved occasional performance issues resulting from long term play (PlayStation 3)
  • Fixed issue where textures would not properly upgrade when installed to drive (Xbox 360)
  • Fixed crash on startup when audio is set to sample rate other than 44100Hz (PC)
  • Fixed issue where projectiles did not properly fade away
  • Fixed occasional issue where a guest would arrive to the player’s wedding dead
  • Dragon corpses now clean up properly
  • Fixed rare issue where dragons would not attack
  • Fixed rare NPC sleeping animation bug
  • Fixed rare issue with dead corpses being cleared up prematurely
  • Skeleton Key will now work properly if player has no lockpicks in their inventory
  • Fixed rare issue with renaming enchanted weapons and armor
  • Fixed rare issue with dragons not properly giving souls after death
  • ESC button can now be used to exit menus (PC)
  • Fixed occasional mouse sensitivity issues (PC)
  • General functionality fixes related to remapping buttons and controls (PC)

Skyrim has gotten many Icrontians playing and talking. In my humble opinion, Skyrim is my Game of the Year. Icrontic reporter Bobby Miller also wrote about how Skyrim raises the bar for immersion in games. Do you think Skyrim deserves a perfect score despite all the bugs and glitches that the game shipped with?

RahnalH102 The only real complaints I have against Skyrim are nit-picky things. Personally I haven't had any outright game breaking bugs (General functionality fixes related to remapping buttons and controls I am thankful for though. Been annoying.)

As for the scoring, I know it is subjective to peoples opinion. Some may include little details, while others look mainly at the gameplay and how everything relates to it, whatever floats their boat. Being that Famitsu has a scale of 1/40 I would think they may be nit-picky about the little stuff, but it would appear they looked past that.

Personally I give Skyrim a perfect score. It's right up my alley of gaming and I have no real qualms with it. The bugs and glitches are temporary and will likely all disappear for stable versions of the game. So I won't factor them in unless they are truly game breaking.
  2. Snarkasm
Snarkasm It pains me to see Nintendogs on that list.
  3. CrazyJoe
CrazyJoe I agree with Snarkasm, all the games mentioned are spectacular, and then Nintendogs...
  4. Canti
    Canti Nintendogs is 50/40.
  5. fatcat
fatcat I kinda wish dragon skeletons would never disappear. So 200 hours later in game I can be like, yeah, I killed that /flex
  6. CrazyJoe
    CrazyJoe That would be cool...
  7. Garg
Garg I'd like to see villagers drag the bones off and make houses out of them, or kids on the street trying to hawk a rib.
  8. PV I wish Christmas would come sooner, because I know that this is what I am getting.
