    Snarkasm I like the trailer.

I'd like even more to see gameplay.

    MAGIC could be good.

shwaip eta? I'll need something to do this summer...
  7. chrisWhite
chrisWhite This game scares the hell out of me, must resist or I'm screwed. Bioware + Star Wars MMO? My life will become consumed, and I thought WoW was bad the half of a year I played it. Lynx or anyone else one here has permission to kick my but if I go near this thing.

By the way, another amazing Blur cinematic, one of my top dream jobs. <3 Blur. They always have the best SIGGRAPH parties too, or so I've heard, they're impossible to get into to—last time they had Carmen Electra performing.
  8. Cliff_Forster
Cliff_Forster I am not an MMO player, but this may be the game to turn me....

One thing I wonder, from a point of balance in the persistent world. Who is going to want to be a Wookie, or a Droid, or a Moisture Farmer when you can be Jedi or Sith? Balance issues?

That being said, I am not sure I have ever seen a better crafted game trailer. Amazing stuff.
  9. Thrax
Thrax The game will have PvP content, but it will primarily be PvE. It is intended to play like an MMO version of KotOR. That game emphasized that all roles can excel and become a hero, and there are numerous encounters in Star Wars canon that account for that.
  10. kryyst
kryyst What seems odd to me is that in an MMO how can everyone be the hero? Guild Wars pulls it off by doing isolated player stories with a group meetup function. This is sounding like they are kinda trying to do the same think. Deliver a KoTOR experience but you can have other people in your group instead of all NPC.

While that kind of game is certainly fun to play. I'm not sure if it's $16 a month fun to play. DDO did sorta the same thing. Everyone gets to experience the Dungeons and be the hero in your small groups and the only reall MMO experience is in the larger meetup areas in the cities where you can't really do anything but interact on a benign level. Lots of people feel that DDO is basically the same game as Guild Wars and not worth the monthly for that reason. The only reall group experience is a dungeon run.
  11. Thrax
Thrax Every MMO has everyone be the hero. That's sort of the point. It's impossible to say at this time how TOR will play that theme.
  12. Gate28
Gate28 All I want it good lightsaber combat that doesn't seem too slow or weighted down with rolls. Saber combat should be fast and exciting!
  13. Thrax
Thrax It's already announced that it will be quasi turn-based as in KOTOR.

I'm ok with that, its like almost every other MMO out there at this juncture.

That said, I get the impression this could be a badass game.
  15. poofie
    poofie oh goodness.

i've already sold my soul to Blizzard, i don't know what else i have to give for this game. my first born child? my left arm? i can't wait to try it out and see how much my social life will suffer!
  16. UPSLynx
UPSLynx This game. I would SO get into this game.

But I never will. I can't stand MMORPGs. I just can't figure it out. I love massive RPGs, I love playing online with people, but when you mix the two, I can't get into it.

I've tried so many. I didn't find any of them to be compelling. Star Wars or not, I'm sure this one would be to different.

Thrax I want to reserve judgment so badly, but KOTOR I & II were so good, and I'm the biggest SW nerd on Icrontic, and I want a good SW game so badly, and and and and and...

But I fear like most franchise MMOs that it will have no end-game content. You will get to the end of it all and there will be nothing to do. It happened to SWG, DDO, LoTRO and any other big franchise MMO that can be named.

End-game content is critical to the success of an MMO, and that's why WoW has done so well, and why EQ did so well before that. Both MMOs are constantly pushing advancement that transcends the leveling experience. More content = dedicated subscribers.

Creative, I like it! The only question is how many Thrax's can the world handle at once. I do believe the mountain had the capacity to create thousands.

You know though I almost wouldn't mind if there wasn't much of an endgame. Only because I would then be assured that rather than continually wasting a large chunk of my life on an ever-increasing endgame I would only waste a large chunk of my life until I reached the "end," after which I could slowly reintegrate myself back into society. :)
  27. GnomeQueen
GnomeQueen I can't see the trailer (curse you, work) but I'd worry about this game having the same problems that SWG ran into- copyrights stuff with George Cannotletgoofstarwars Lucas had.
  28. Winfrey
Winfrey My friends and I have talked about this game quite a bit. We think it is the only MMO coming out soon that can potentially be a WoW killer/competitor. Star Wars has enough nerd intellectual property to pull anything off.
  29. Thrax
Thrax ^ They said the same thing about SWG against EQ.

The fact remains that good Star Wars games are, unfortunately, the exception, rather than the rule. JKII: JO, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, KOTOR I, KOTOR II and some of the Rogue Squadrons are really th only ones that come to mind.

I know you're largely being facetious, but as a player I can easily separate RL from the MMO. There is a reason why I continued to be active in IRC, write articles, and post on Icrontic... In fact, most people had no idea that I played WoW until my final year of play. The point is that I am good at distancing myself from a game -- any game -- and I hope the opportunity to do end-game content is there. Sucks for the people who can't figure out what that weird "x" button does in the corner of the window.

SWG was epic in its awfulness.

I think this KOTOR era game will give the developers much more freedom to tell a unique story and ultimately be in full creative control.

  32. Preacher
Preacher It continues to impress. If it's good, I'll need more caffeine, more money, and a new family to replace the one that will leave me.
  33. Thrax
Thrax It continues to look good, but franchise MMOs rarely have end-game content to sustain continued play, and that's what worries me. Providing a method of advancement once I reach the end of the primary grind is essential, and games like CoH completely dropped the ball on it. I'm still reserving judgment and fapping for the beta.

  40. Gate28
Gate28 If people from Icrontic are playing, I plan on rolling Republic on Death Wind Corridor with Reddit.

  42. Ilriyas
Ilriyas I'd totally buy it...if not for the fact that I've never really gotten into an MMO long enough to ever get my money's worth and the fact that I'll be paying for University soon means I wouldn't be capable of paying the subscription anyways.
  43. Thrax
Thrax You'd be surprised as to the useless shit that can be afforded in college if you try hard enough.

    Time is money, eh???

Well, maybe not if you keep on bronie'ing. ;p

Ah, well, to each his own, but why a triple major???

    John.
  46. Preacher
Preacher When you find the +1, fatcat, can you let me know. I need to add a +2 and +3 too? Rex and I will be buying SWTOR and we want Thrax to get his "+"s.

Pre-order fees are like atm fees...rampant raging capitalism. That's why I prefer Steam and Credit Unions/small banks!
  47. Ilriyas
Ilriyas History is the major, English and Law are possible minors, if history doesn't work out then I'll take the extra time to get a major in one of them.

Also my bronie'ing is an entirely valid use of my time XD.

Ah well I got the better part of a year to save up extra funds, and who knows I may be able to play (Occasionally)

Ok, one major leaves you with some time to Bronie and play otherwise. Law, especially a masters or doctorate degree in it, is intense though. If you like to write a lot, English or Journalism might be better(Historical novels genre writing as a side thing??). Writing briefs for legal things is like writing about medicine or some highly techie area - and judges don't usually get sarcasm.

Best of luck with all of it - from a Bronie Agnostic even. :D
