By now, if you’ve paid any attention to Icrontic at all in the last couple of months, you’ve heard me go on and on about how awesome the HP EliteBook 8740W Mobile Workstation is.
It is my firm belief that this is one of, if not the, best mobile workstations in the world for content creation at this time; with the NVIDIA Quadro 5000M under the hood, there’s not much out there that can touch this machine for certain tasks—especially 3D content creation and Mercury-accelerated Adobe Creative Suite 5 applications.
Now, this is not something that most people can rush out and buy, even if they need it. There are students, entrepreneurs, and amateur artists out there who desperately need a machine like this, but can’t possibly afford it.
HP gave me one to give away, but I’ve been hoarding it for a couple of months, and here’s why: I couldn’t think of a good way to give it away. I didn’t want to make it random, because this is something that could change a life. There could be someone out there who would use a machine like this to finally create the video game of their dreams. Or there could be someone out there who would go to art school if they could get this machine. Yes, it’s that big a deal. So, on that note:

2: Fill in all required information; the scholarship is open to US residents only. A valid email, phone number, name, and shipping address must be supplied.
3: Send us an essay; it can be written, video, photographic, hand-drawn, a song, anything! The more creative, the better. Convince us! Tell us why you need this machine in particular, what you’re going to do with it, and why you deserve it. Entries will be judged purely on creativity! Please try to avoid the “sob story”—we know you’re the poorest, most disadvantaged, most underprivileged person in the world and you need this computer more than anybody else ever. It’s going to be the same story with nearly everyone, so try to avoid appealing to our emotions to guilt us in to picking you; chances are, those kinds of entries will not be considered. Instead, make us laugh, make us delight, and make us want to give you this computer so you can create even better content! You should probably read our full 10-day review so that you understand exactly what makes the EliteBook 8740W with the NVIDIA Quadro 5000M so special; mention of the unique qualities that make this computer so necessary for certain types of content creators is sure to win points with us. 4: Entries will be pored over, agonized over, discussed, debated, and digested by a committee. Entry deadline is 10pm EST (GMT-0500) on March 21st, 2011. After that, wait a few days and we’ll announce a winner.
The winner will receive an HP EliteBook 8740W mobile workstation, with an Intel Core i7 Q740 CPU, 500gb 7200RPM SATA drive, 8gb of RAM, Windows 7 Professional 64bit, NVIDIA Quadro 5000M GPU, HP LightScribe DVD-RW drive, 1920×1200 17″ IPS 30-bit DreamColor display, fingerprint scanner, 230W power supply and a 3 year warranty. The retail value of this scholarship is approximately $4600.
