Unigine Corp. are a something of a household name among graphics enthusiasts with their Heaven benchmarking software, famous for its lavish effects and heavy use of DirectX 11 effects—and Unigine seems determined to mirror that success with their first foray into game developement, Oil Rush.

Set in a flooded post-apocalyptic world with an insatiable thirst for the black gold—Oil Rush is an intriguing blend of real time strategy and tower defense gameplay elements with some truly stunning visuals. Oil Rush places the player in command of a mixed force of naval/air units which they must use to both defend their own positions and capture enemy platforms in order to secure the Earth’s last remaining oil reserves. The swarms of units are produced by production platforms and directed in the usual RTS fashion, with the game’s tower defence influences showing in the add-on defensive weapons available for the platforms. Player can add machine guns, artillery, and rocket launchers to defend their floating factories, but the all-important oil rigs have no such upgrade—requiring a naval or air presence to protect them.

Although the gorgeous graphics will certainly be a major selling point, Oil Rush is not just a pretty face—the single player campaign is backed up by online/LAN multiplayer modes and Unigine are promising a software development kit to lure game modders onboard.

Oil Rush is currently available on Windows, Linux & Mac OSX as a DRM free, digital download from Desura or the Unigine Online Store (which includes Steam/Desura keys with a retail release), and on Steam (it’s on sale for $17.99 right now).
