Up to the minute Macworld coverage

giantappleLive coverage of the 2009 Macworld event, Apple’s last, began at around noon. Keep your eyes here or on Twitter for time-stamped updates straight from the keynote address.

1:37 PM EST: That’s all, folks. Apple’s 2009 keynote address has come to a close. Are you excited by what you saw today? Disappointed? Were you expecting some additional gadgets like the iPhone Nano or the Big McHugelarge iTouch? Sound off in our comments!

We’ll keep the coverage going throughout the day as more details roll in from the show floor.

1:34 PM EST: Tony Bennett is on stage with live music. I believe this is the end of the keynote address. Stay tuned.

1:31 PM EST: iTunes Wi-Fi music store. Same price, same selection, downloadable anywhere. The iPhone now has complete access to the iTunes store, as though you were at a desktop.

1:30 PM EST: iTunes plus! DRM-free 256kbps AAC files! By the end of 2009, all 10 million iTunes songs will be DRM-free!

1:29 PM EST: Ah, the “oooone last thing.” We’re talking iTunes now. Apple caved to tiered pricing: $0.99 cents, $0.69 cents, and $1.29.

1:26 PM EST: The $2799 (yikes…) notebook carries EPEAT gold certification. It’s arsenic, PVC , BFR, and mercury free, has 34% smaller packaging and is “highly recyclable.”

1:24 PM EST: Apple says the battery will last for 5 years, at which point you must send the notebook in for an exchange/recycle.

1:21 PM EST: The battery contains independent circuitry which will do wear-leveling for the cells. It makes sure that no one cell is overcharged.

1:20 PM EST: The matte coating is $50, by the way.

1:16 PM EST: They’re talking about the battery now. Up to eight hours on a single charge and 1000 recharge cycles. They’re billing the custom integrated battery as better because it’s bigger and has larger battery life. Getting rid of battery removal components allowed for a 40% bigger battery. What do you guys think?

1:15 PM EST: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz Dual Core, 6MB L2 Cache, 8GB memory at 1066 MHz DDR3, GeForce 9400M & 9600 GT, 320GB HDD standard, 256GB SSD alternative. Three USB 2.0, Firewire and mini displayport as well.

1:14 PM EST: 1920×1200 display (ON A 17″?!?!?), .98″ thick, 6.6 pounds, matte and glossy coating, 700:1 contrast, 60% improved gamut. Integrated battery? The hell?

1:11 PM EST: A new aluminum unibody 17″ MacBook Pro. This is the “one more thing.”

1:10 PM EST: The iWork.com beta is free, but will eventually be a paid service. It’s available right now.

1:07 PM EST: iWork.com looks like Pages, contains all formatting, and is cross-platform compatible. That’s cool. Yay JScript?

1:03 PM EST: He’s talking about iWork.com beta. What is it? Shares your iWork problems with other people. You can collaborate in troubleshooting document issues, and see them online. How long until we have a catastrophic information leak with this service?

1:02 PM EST: iWork is $79, $99 with a family pack, or $49 with a Mac purchase.

1:00 PM EST: Mathmathmathmath. Phil’s talking spreadsheets to get the beancounters all excited.

12:57 PM EST: Pages will allow you to hand-build outlines and templates for documents prior to writing. Boring.

12:54 PM EST: Keynote is allowing remote control with a “keynote remote.” A $00.99 app that uses the iPhone to connect to Keynote!

12:53 PM EST: Alright, that’s pretty cool… Objects can transition between slides. It’s not just a static slide into another static slide. They demonstrated a scattered deck of cards organizing into a neat deck as the next slide came into play.

12:51 PM  EST: As a note, iLife ’09 is a $79 upgrade.

12:49 PM EST: iWork and iLife 09 are both shipping at the end of January. They’re talking about spreadsheets and presentations… How boring.

12:47 PM EST: You can buy additional musical lessons for $4.99. They’re talking about Credence Clearwater Revival right now.

12:44 PM EST: Garage Band has recruited actual artists to teach you their songs. They have STING! WINNAR.

12:42 PM EST: Using an HD resolution video tutor, the program will teach you how to play guitar or keyboard. What. They’ll even get you started playing on your first lesson.

12:41 PM EST: There are more iMovie features, but Phil is back on stage is here to talk about Garage Band 09.

12:40 PM EST: They just put together an amazing video with titles, transitions and music in SECONDS. Holy hell.

12:36 PM EST: iMovie now supports multi-timeline editing, audio overlays, pre/post-editing previews, transitions, custom themes, and more across every project. The video stabilization is supposed to be AMAZINGLY good. The video was so amazing the crowd sounded dumbfounded.

12:34 PM EST: The Twitterverse is claiming that MacRumors has been hacked. It’s currently offline. EDIT: Confirmed by @TimRogers

12:31 PM EST: A developer for iMovie is on stage talking about iMovie’s new features now.

12:30 PM EST: iMovie has software video stabilization. Is this even going to work well? I’m confused. But it has 3D and 2D travel maps of places you’ve gone by putting videos on maps.

12:28 PM EST: Brand new version of iMovie. Weak reception from the audience.

12:27 PM EST: All photos geotagged by location will be placed under a pin on a global map. You can click the pin on the map and see all the photos for that location. Alright, Phil, enough about software. Hardware, please.

12:26 PM EST: More live demonstrations of what the new iLife/iPhoto can do with geotagging, geolocation, photo tagging, and more. Zzzz.

12:23 PM EST: Phil is now demonstrating the facial recognition technology. It creates a corkboard of your friends’ pictures by detecting and then cropping in on their faces. You can tag a person the first time iPhoto recognizes a new one, and it’ll prompt for their other pictures.

12:21 PM EST: Facebook and Flickr now have two-way sync with iPhoto. Now everything can stay up to date and allow creepy Facebook stalkers to love you from afar.

12:18 PM EST: Photos that have no geotag can have one added by hand to complete the pictures. iPhoto also supports Facebook and Flickr as well.

12:15 PM EST: iPhoto can now meta-tag pictures by geolocation. Add latitude and longitude information to pictures. This feature uses GPS and user-defined tags to build an intelligent database of images.

12:13 PM EST: The “Faces” feature will allow you to tag a person by name, then iLife will find all other instances of that person and add him/her to the photo group.

12:12 PM EST: The new “Faces” feature is a new way to organize photos. It’s facial recognition and can sort people by their faces. Wacky.

12:07 PM EST: FIRST PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT — iLife ’09.

12:07 PM EST: 2008 was the biggest year for Apple; 9.7 million macs sold. They grew twice as fast as the rest of the industry.

12:05 PM EST: 3.4 million customers visit Apple stores every week.

12:04 PM EST: Blahblahblah about their stores in Beijing, China; Europe and Sydney, Australia.

12:03 PM EST: Here we go!

12:01 PM EST: They’re asking for silenced cell phones in the keynote hall, now. We must be getting pretty close, huh?!

11:42 AM EST: Just 18 minutes until it’s go time! Updates will be organized in reverse chronology, with newest updates at the top. Are you ready?

In other words, we have cut our support budget and adopted a new slogan: Support not included.
  7. MiracleManS
MiracleManS I always become concerned by not being able to remove/replace my own battery.

By their math, you get ~8000 hours of battery life out of that thing. So.. 200 weeks...I guess that's not too bad.
  8. Thrax
Thrax All iTunes songs are DRM free by the end of 2009. It's called iTunes plus, and existing tracks can upgrade to it (RIAA tax, probably).
  9. MiracleManS
    MiracleManS Still, I accept that. I <3 DRM-less media.
