As 2010 lumbers along into the months of spring and summer, Microsoft is reminding users that Windows 2000 and a selection of outdated Windows service packs will no longer be supported.
Beginning April 13, Microsoft will be officially ending all support for Windows Vista SP0. Later on in the year, on July 13, Microsoft will also end support for Windows XP SP2 and every version of Windows 2000. These service packs or operating systems will no longer be eligible for security updates.
“Keeping your PC up to date and as safe as possible is something that people need to think about beyond just being on the latest service pack. I want to remind everyone of the benefits of keeping Windows Update turned on,” writes Microsoft blogger Brandon LeBlanc. “Through Windows Update, not only are you provided with the latest security updates and service packs for Windows at no cost, but also the latest updates to products such as Internet Explorer 8 and Microsoft Security Essentials.”
Microsoft advises that any individuals or corporations still running this software to visit the Microsoft Support Lifecycle blog for more information.
