December 2nd at 12:00am—it was impossible to get onto the new MTGCommander website. Wizards writer and R&D director Aaron Forsythe posted the exciting news that caused that lockup: “Magic: The Gathering was finally going to give EDH the attention it deserved.”
Alongside the new uniform name for the format known as “Commander,” (For which the old website had to change web addresses) we also are going to experience a variety of new and amazing features for our beloved format:
Wizards will be releasing five “wedge” colored decks in June of 2011. The decks will be available on both MTGO and MTG and will be printed in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
Each of the wedge decks will feature three options for their Commander (formerly known as Generals.) If you know anything about the wedge colors (two friendly colors and an enemy color,) then you will know that currently there is only one Legendary creature that can count as your Commander. This means that Wizards will be producing two new legends for each color. Including this monster!
Including these ten new Commanders (two new for each color) Wizards will be printing 51 brand-new Vintage/Legacy-legal cards for the purposes of Commander alone. That’s 51 cards with the sole purpose of filling holes that existed in existing Commander decks.
All of these exciting new products will be only $29.99 per pre-constructed 100 card deck. For the hundreds of dollars it’s cost me over time produce my EDH deck, this is an amazing way to get into what is arguably the best Magic format for kitchen table and competitive player alike.
If you were looking for an excuse to get into this format, you won’t find a better one than this.
