If geeks love it, we’re on it

Your popup blocker is less effective; have you noticed?

Your popup blocker is less effective; have you noticed?

The Den of Geek took a moment to discuss popups, a nuisance that has made a creeping return in the last 18 months. Apparently we owe our gratitude to a company named Adimpact, which has turned to DHTML for popup serving.

Regarding the technology, affiliate marketing blogger Shawn Collins had this to say:

“works around Microsoft SP2 Update, Google Toolbar Blocker, Symantec’s Pop-Up Blocker and more…The Dynamic Popup Generator can create pressure pop-ups, unblockable DHTML pop-ups, PictoPop-ups, conditional popups, instant opt-in pop-ups, and rotating pop-ups”

Their piece got me thinking: I hadn’t even noticed that popup frequency was on the rise, but thinking on it, I know that to be true. What are your thoughts?

  1. Snarkasm
Snarkasm I don't think I've noticed a ton in Firefox recently, but a few here and there; not much more or less since I started using it, if I remember correctly.
  2. MiracleManS
MiracleManS I've noticed an increase, although small, in the number of adds that make it through the pop-up blocker on chrome and Firefox. Its kind of disturbing.
  3. CB
CB I don't think I've seen a pop-up ad on my own PC since 2006
  4. DrLiam
DrLiam I have noticed a definite increase and thought my pop-up blocker was out of date. Looks like this could be the case and pop-up blockers need to add some tweaks (if possible) to defeat these new breeds of pop-ups.
  5. Shawn Collins One important thing to note - the blog post I wrote about pop-ups was from January 2005.

I hadn't noticed my current theme was not displaying the date of the posts, so I'd better fix that. :)
  6. Thrax
Thrax It still makes a good point, Mr. Collins. Your post has made its rounds through the grapevine to several sites today, including ours, and I chose to run it because it's still pertinent. DHTML popups, and all sorts of ridiculous new blocker-evading tricks are on the prowl.

Despite FF and ABP, I've gotten a good dozen popups today from random sites in my trawling of the interwibble.

Thank you for stopping by. :)
  7. MachineDog
MachineDog I've noticed that very recently I've actually begun to be affected by popups again, so I'd agree that yes they're finding new ways of getting around our popup and adblocking solutions.
  8. chrisWhite
chrisWhite I haven't noticed any recently, maybe one or two but nothing that sticks out. Maybe because I primarily browse on Safari (c'mon Google, I want Chrome OS X!)
  9. Leonardo
Leonardo I have noticed more now as compared to six months or a year ago. I see now that it probably isn't just my imagination.
