Official Team Short-Media F@H Thread

…we’ve already got a Folding team. Oh yeah, we’ve had the team since the summer of 2001. Oh yes, we are doing well too – No. 8 in the world.

It doesn’t really seem that long ago that Leonardo opened a new thread at our previous forum home asking, “Who wants to start a Folding@Home team?” Almost right away, a couple wild-eyed computer enthusiasts took notice. DragonAce was the initial driving force. Tbonz was the first team captain. Mmonnin was (and is) an organizer and booster par excellence. Within a week “Team 93” was registered as an official Folding team with a handful of members. The excitement became evident to the forum members, and soon the ranks began to swell.

Look what we’ve accomplished since that question was posed in 2001! Before we could catch our breath, we were on Stanford University’s team standings list. At first our small band clawed and scratched our way to 100 points. Soon 100 turned into a thousand, and on into scores of thousands. Six figures soon rolled over into seven, as we rolled over half a hundred teams who had been established and productive for some time before us. We are now approaching four million points. Holy cow! All this from a team built from the ground up by members of a small tech forum? Indeed.

Is this just nostalgia for days gone by? Not at all! We are still a force to be reckoned with; and we are having bunches of fun in the process.

Dear Short-Media Folding@Home Team members, here we are, having just recently relaunched our great team under a new, colorful banner. The name of our dynamic team has changed, the site that hosts us is new; but we are still the same friendly family that’s dedicated to furthering scientific research with our computers. The synthesis of who we are and what has made us successful has not changed! Catch the Spirit. We are here to stay.

Show pride in your team. Relate the pride you have for yourself. Make this thread the gathering place where you come to shoot the breeze with your fellow members. Well heck, even if you aren’t a member, you are welcome to hang out here. A word of caution though - Folding is contagious and addictive. If you visit, you are likely to become a team member.

Simply put, WELCOME TO THE NEW ‘FOLDING THREAD’!

If you are new to Short-Media and wonder why all the fuss is about “Folding”, please ask questions. Before long, you might quite possibly find yourself being a dedicated team member!

Don’t be bashful. Post in this thread about who you are, when you joined, what your experience has been with the team. Post about where you think we are going. Post about…. Hey, this is the new Folding lounge.

Obviously, there is credit due in this post to more members of the charter team that I have not named. I apologize. My memory…

Your Loyal Team Member,

Leonardo:wave:

It was jdodgeviper. I came up with it when i was 12 or something. Awesome car though. Then about a year back I decided I was in need of a change. I couldn't think of anything so I just came up with that. I've wanted to come up with something else but I never could think of anything, I suck at coming up with names... Hope you like my "story".

    7,500 here I come. :fold:

    Thanks Leo

You should really thank General Keebler. He thought, rightfully so, that we should revive the "Who Wants to Start a Folding@Home Team" that died in the demise of our former Forum.

Thanks Keebs, for motivating me. I feel good!

    2 years and still folding strong!! :D w00t w00t!!

    Excellent Leo!!!

As Leonardo has stated, #93 has been around for a long time, we have a history and a big part of that history is icrontic.com.

I logged onto icrontic when I bought my first Abit KT7 Mobo, as most of the people who first inhabited the site had the same MB and were looking for direction with the multitude of high performance options that captivated a whole slew of computer enthusiast's and overclocker's. I tweaked that board and upgraded my chip's and stressed and streched them to their full potential but after learning all that I wondered, what am I going to do with the power??? I was then introduced to Distributed Computing via UD (United Devices), shortly thereafter I came along and saw this folding effort brought on by Leonardo and quickly adopted by other ic members such as GAbOS, dangeraaron, DragonAce, AUsTBirD to name a few and after researching what the Folding effort was all about, I knew this was the campaign for me.

That first icronticfolding@home Team thread grew and swelled until it was no longer enough room for the amount of people who lined up to participate and help out. We then were granted an "official" folding forum to accomodate our needs in helping one another run the program when problems cropped up, we were instrumental in making the folding@home project work, with all the beta releases, troubleshooting and ironing out all the bugs, we were there, I saw it, I was apart of it and a great number of you have as well.

We built a team with whom are dedicated to the cause, people who love competition, people who want to make a difference in the world one WU at a time.

And then there was the ICx project, Leo approached me with the idea of the ICx project, a bold inititiave never before undertaken in the DC world, you guys were supportive in pledging money and spare H/W hand over fist, supplying selected members of our team with dedicated folding machines, for this particular effort to be in the double digits is a testament to the peoples who comprise our Team. This is all a brand new concept and you guys picked up the ball and made it reality. Leo, mmonnin, DragonAce, MrBill, muddocktor and all the hosts, I think the world of all you, you all have demonstrated integrity, dedication and I feel honored and priviledged be apart of this all.

The Folding signatures, banner and stats were created by lsevald with whom put a huge amount of time into creating a very efficient system for us all to enjoy. Props to you man, our current system is based on all of your efforts which General Keebler has spearheaded in continuing on is a feature and staple of this Team, thank you.

The seemingly peril of icrontic.com after the hacking born a new site called short-media.com, brought to us by primesuspect, Shorty & Mediaman, they invited the Team to continue under a new name and we all said yes and never looked back, with the new name, with the same members and also a great bunch of newer people with whom have since joined our ranks and we are continuing to keep and take this Team to the top.

This is a new thread in a new era based on an old tradition, this marks the induction of the new Team thread at Short-Media, a place where we can hang our daily thoughts, a place where everyone is welcome.

I salute you all, my great Teammates, Fold on! :fold:

Wait a minute....you can't have a "let's start a folding team!" thread without T-BirD having at least a *few* posts in it, now can you? ;)

I forgot what the exact count mmonin did for me a like 20 months ago, but when I had say 300 posts in the old forum, 290 or so were in the folding team thread, hehe.

Leonardo's our pappy...he dun made us all folding monsters!

Gentlemen, my role was so simple: all I did was bring up the idea and familiarize a few people with the concept.

The hard working facilitators were Tbonz, DragonAce, and mmonnin. (Again, I'm sure I've unintentially left out names of some the early movers and shakers - sorry).

I signed up in July of 2002. Turned in a single WU and left. Really joined Icrontic as a contributing member in November of '02. Racked up about 5k points and 6k posts before it bit the big one.

As you can see, my output is crap, but I fold anyways. Thank you.

There's an 800MHz athlon here abouts that sees 3 hours of use a day. An 1800+ that sees about 10% to F@H as my brother is a 3dmsmax renderwhore, and then there's my PC from 1.53 to 2.25GHz over the nine months cranking out probably 8000 of what I have. If I had the money, I would be investing it into breaking the top 10.

I joined because I had originally started folding for DSL Reports. Needless to say, they never got me into the spirit of the team like Icrontic did. I didn't have much folding power back then, just a T-Bird 1000 running 12 hours a day, but the spirit of the team made me want to contribute even the tiniest bit to the team. I felt welcome, the community was growing and flourishing, then Leo came up with the bright idea for hosted folding machines.

Well, I knew I wanted one. What I couldn't provide to the team in points I would make up for in dedication. Since I didn't have the kind of money to donate to big charities, folding became my way of donating. I pledged money and parts to the ICx cause. I donated the motherboard for the inagural machine, hosted by t1rhino. Unfortunately the mobo gave up quick. :(

I continued to fold and started making PC upgrades based around folding. I got myself a quieter HS/F so I could leave the PC on 24/7. I bought faster and faster processors. I bought a router in anticipation of one day owning an ICx machine.

My day finally came! I was chosen as the host for IC4. Just a little back story first. I had been working a crappy job at that point and nothing for me seemed to be looking up. I was in a major low point in my life. It's amazing how something like being chosen to host a PC can brighten your life! I was on cloud nine, because I was being acknowledged as the little guy who never gave up on the little team that never gave up.

The best mistake I ever made was happening upon Icrontic. I took a gamble, I stayed, and ended up meeting some incredible people. Whatever the name is, Short-Media, Icrontic, TD-Media ;), the community is the same. A tight group of people dedicated to making a difference. A great bunch of people. I'm glad I've been able to contribute in so many ways- being an ICx/SMx host, making silly posts, being a mod, making stupid posts, helping to build S-M, making dumb posts, helping people with computer problems, and making moronic posts.

I've met some amazing people, I'd love to meet some of you in person! This might come true soon if Shorty makes his way over to New York. He'll be crashing on my couch and getting drunk in dive bars with me. Brilt, LIN! We all live very close to each other. When are we going to Corner Bistro?!?!?

I joined UD after reading an article in Consumer Reports about P2P programs. It had several DC projects such as SETI, some AIDS project which I never found, and something else. (I still have that article btw.) It didnt have FAH but I didnt want to look for aliens but I did find UD after a google search. I joined UD and ran that for awhile. Then I was told about Icrontic.

I started reading OT since I didnt know much about HW at the time and I found the predecessor to this thread and read it all. Confusing because a client change from 1.x to 2.x. The whole Team thing drew me in and I downloaded the graphical client. I was hooked.

After awhile we got our own Forum which REALLY helped the team out and that was about the only forum I read. I was totally addicted. Soon I became a mod for dedication to the team and helping out with the ICx project.

I pretty much my life to Folding. Without I seriously would not be the person I am today. I wouldnt have had a reason to come to a forum every day several times a day. Along with my folding addiction came my computer addiction. That lead me to take a CIS class that took up half my day at school. I knew my Sophmore year I was taking that class and planned my Junior and Senior to make room for it. Along with that class I was asked to help out in the tech department at my HS. Now I am enrolled at DeVry University in Columbus majoring in Computer Engineering Technology (CET). Without my venture into the folding world I would not ne who I am today. I would not be at this forum today. Heck maybe this forum wouldnt be here today if it wasnt for the Team.

FAH is had a huge impact on my life and will continue far into the future.
