MyNewName5333 & myself just got out of a meeting with our school district's head tech about Folding@Home.

She ( ;) ) sounded intrested but had a question she needed to answer for herself about the routers. She said she'd contact us in 1 week with an answer.

She said we'd probably start out with 1 lab folding, then maybe more. The district contains 1,300 computers, ranging from 166MHz P2s to 2.66 GHz P4s. :eek2:

Two possible labs we'd start out with are filled with P4 2.66 GHz.... about 30 in each lab.

We'll keep you all updated as we hear it :fold:

Okay, Shorty, you get to work on a Flash movie, I'll craft an award-winning appeal letter, Park will write a PHP script to automatically install F@H on every PC, and whatever you do, DON'T LET MEDIAMAN NEAR THE SERVER!!!! ;D

I sure hope you and MNN5333 can pull this off, Park. If everything goes well and you can deploy to all the computers in the district, that would put it up there with DGROMS.com and plext with OCAU in production.:kneel: :woowoo:

I never did get a reply from my admin or my UVJVS teacher. I wonder if they ever got out. Like Norton blocked it or something. I am gonna try again.

If they can just get 1 lab with 30 p4 2.66GHz running that would be sweet.

I had to change F@H on one of the work systems to only eat 85% of the CPU. That way it's able to stay on 24/7, rather than being turned off 12 hours of the day. anything I tried over 85% noticeably slowed down the computer, but 85% did not noticeably slow it down. So, even if those 2.66GHz machines are throttled to 85% CPU, that's still 2.26GHz. 2.26GHz * 30 > 67GHz!!!!! That's some serious :fold:

Keebs, there's a minor issue with that image... the tongue is back, like the smiley is moving forward, but the eyes are bugged out, which implies rapid deceleration or reverse movement... the eyes should be squished back into it's head if it's moving forward that fast... :D

No, no... the REST of the face is getting sucked backward except the eyes... because the eyes are more aerodynamic... yeah...

Pullllease tell us that yes, the head tech will give approval.

That's excellent evangelism. I'd really enjoy reading how you two influenced the tech people. Please tell us about your salesmanship.

    I'll give the quick explination...

I talked with a good friend of mine, who had worked in the tech department and knew everyone, and asked him if he could set a meeting up with the head lady. So a couple days later we went up there and talked to her about proposing an idea for the district computers.

    Today - A good day.
Park, Kurtis (guy who knows the people), and I walked in there and told her something like this:

We'd like Fort Osage (our school) to run Folding@home. :explain F@H here: no impact on performance, run by stanford, runs as a service, takes 5 - 10 MB on the HDD.

She asked us why and how we got started in this. Told her it finds cures for diseases and it would benifit out team.

The whole time she sounded really interested and had some good questions about it. She wants to do some of her own research as park said.

The only real problem was that the school blocks all of the ports except a few. And she wanted to find out what port F@H uses. Park was pretty sure it was 8080 but we couldn't garuntee anything. So when my computer sends in a WU in about 2 hours I'm going to see what port it uses, just hope I don't forget.

As of right now neither park nor I know whether or not we will get to install F@H on any of the computers BUT... She really sounded like she was into it so I'm thinking we'll get atleast some. If all goes well we'll get 1 lab @ first to test it out and then maybe the whole district.

Thats just the basics of what happened, I was tired and I don't remember it all very clearly lol. Park - add anything if you want...

So we'll keep you all informed... all we can do now is hope!

    Thx shwaip :)

That's what I told her (but wasn't 100% sure), but she is worried it won't make it past their proxy.

    For about a year now they've only let 2 ports in & out... 21 & 80...

Let's hope it shoots through and she likes what she sees...

    Now, we wait :ninja:

Awesome. I tried to find which port it uses earlier but it didnt' work.

We did tell her that we were pretty sure it was 8080...

    Thanks.

Primary port is 8080, but F@H also can use port 80. I've never set one up to use just port 80, but I know that FAH WW has, because I remember reading several posts of his in the past about it over at the folding community.

Just resent emails to my school admin and the UVJVS_Lab teacher. I dont think they got out for some reason, or I didnt get them cause I would have thought my teacher would have responded.

Ya... I'm thinking of making a petition for my school and getting somewhere around 200 signatures from people among the student body, then sending the petition to the dean of my school and the IT department. I doubt it would work but it's a thought.

Thought this could use a little update :)

    So..

She (Head Tech Lady) disappeared :hrm: We've had people up there everyday to check and nada. At first we thought her kid was sick, so she might be home with him. Who knows really.. It's been a week or so past the answer date so it's just guesses now.

I'm sure she's not just avoiding us.. so waiting is OK by me

    We'll keep trying..
