Back in the day sub-teams were against team policy completely. But, I applaud anyone willing to go out on a limb to stir up interest. I know it can be discouraging when you just have one machine to fold with. Having platform specific sub-teams seems like a good way to keep the smaller folder in the game by contributing to a larger group while still being within SM.
Personally I always keep my machines to myself, as I like to track my individual capability, but kudos to anyone that finds a sub-team to be their motivation to keep trekking.
