The computer seems to be running better, but it still inserts "syp" into my startup itmes each time I restart my computer. It also still can't find "C:\Program" at startup. What should I do about those?
Hi Sir Guy! While Jmoney is offline, i'l try and help.
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop. http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!
here's the smitfraudfix report (it only took about 10 seconds to complete, I dont know if that's important or not):

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

I know what you mean about helping ppl. To me helping people is one of the funnest things that I do. All I meant is that there's an endless suply here.
hmm, on it removing your background although it usually only removes the background on * NON infected* machines sometimes it will still remove the BG on even infected machines but you can simply choose a new background and yes MSN is usually the default homepage with windows but like the background you can simply choose your own homepage.. yes it is my friend:)
PS hows your machine running now?
well, on startup the computer still cant find C:\Program, and "Syp" still inserts itself as a startup item. Also when shutting down, "SpysweeperUI.exe is not responding" and sometimes Iexlore.exe has the same problem. Do I still have a virus?

Oh and i dont think i downloaded or installed winantivirus. but i'm not really sure, it's possible that at one point i thought it was a good program (back in my naive days). I vaguely remember downloading something that popped up--and feeling really stupid about it later--but i dont kow if it was winantivirus. I think it might have been sysprotect. :rolleyes2
hmm, glad you got the net back up working on it because if you hadn't i coulda run you through a fix on that, but as for the winantivirus 2006 pro that's actually from the vundo trojan which I had you take care of earlier but could you please find and delete this folder if it exists--> C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 *if it gives you trouble deleting reboot into safe mode and try deleting it from there, and did you intentionally download/install sysprotect?
I couldn't find that folder. And I dont really remember if I installed sysprotect or not. I remember something popping up everyonce in a while a few years ago. I think it was sysprotect. It was an official-looking window that said something like "you need sysprotect to help your system." well i always thought that it was a scam or just some popup. but then it started popping up when i wasn't online. and it started looking more official so i figured, "why not?" so i installed it. a few min later, after a scan, i decided it was a scam and i tried to get rid of it.
again I'm not sure if this was sysprotect but if it wasn't then it was something really similar (maybe winantiviruspro). regardless i dont want it now. just feel a bit dumb about it. :shakehead

no problem! not dumb just frustrated but do you have hidden/protected folders & files viewable? cause if you don't that might be why your not able to find that folder from winAV pro
Yes. I've got the "show hidden files and folders" box checked in folder options. I also did a few searches for "files and folders" called "WinAntiVirus Pro 2006," "WinAntiVirus Pro," and "WinAntiVirus." The searches didn't find the folder either.

But yeah no more virus msgs.

HmmmI just took a peek into my registry and noticed a folder called "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\m œãÒðG=‚4¬ Fó9BÙj„Š¢F*xè~5™çãÿ7LÎΦ¼hûµMÎüƒCØ£¢xf×wÿ´mãeõ¡÷¹îËÓ¶º†¨Míƒÿ,µÙy7íU/¾má*¬þ³÷'3üä2Bo±’(0k62„‚‚ej-Õ1ÖéÖÒ—!Ðg!ô]ª'j@öx`,qúU‚X6Ë”¢?*¬çÆ€#‰‹2Uw7D&¯ &·V•>%øu<bo=O4Hú." I dont know, but that doesn't look good to me.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
- Restart your computer
- After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
- Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
- Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
- Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmdSelect option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
I'm going away for a week and will not be able to post until I get back. I'l be able to help you when I get back.
-Thanks
But yeah the computer got moved :sad2: So, I should have the two logs posted in about 24 hours (maybe a little less).
My desktop background is gone and my home page has been changed to msn.com.
lol here are the results:

Oh and i dont think i downloaded or installed winantivirus. but i'm not really sure, it's possible that at one point i thought it was a good program (back in my naive days). I vaguely remember downloading something that popped up--and feeling really stupid about it later--but i dont kow if it was winantivirus. I think it might have been sysprotect. :rolleyes2
again I'm not sure if this was sysprotect but if it wasn't then it was something really similar (maybe winantiviruspro). regardless i dont want it now. just feel a bit dumb about it.
