How hot is hot?

I just did some mods on an old full tower case that had poor ventilation in it and it made a world of difference. In the lower front where Geeky had a red spot where there is an 89mm fan, I enlarged that part to fit a 120mm fan. I had previously installed a 120mm fan in the case side between the vid card and the cpu area. Both of those fans blow into the case. In the top back side of the case there were 2 spots to mount 80mm fans, which I had previously cut the punched out grill of the case out of there and used 2-80mm wire grills for much less back proessure and flow noise. Finally, this old full tower case has a bulkhead between the mobo/hard drive area and the top part of the case that contains the 5 1/4 drives and psu and it only had a hole of about 2" X 4" in this bulkhead. I went and cut out this hole to about a 4" X 6" hole, which really improved airflow and gave more room to run wires down to the mobo and hard drive. This old case now has a Dual MP2600 AMD system in it and it's full load temp while folding is 35 C (by socket thermistor and MBM).

ViCiOus,here's Dremel's site in your area of the world and you can go through it and see what a dremel tool is and the various cutting tools that it will run. I mostly use the heavy duty cutoff wheels and a few stones.Since they have this site-specific for Australia and Asia, I don't think you will have too much problems finding one over in Singapore.:)

I find one which is http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/index.html but they dont have some of the stuff i wan so i was hoping maybe you guys can help me out. Thanks.

And i'm not using a wireless KB. Just type in short forms. We do tat all the time here in singapore whenever we chat. :p

Oooh. A US company that ships internationally. That's not going to be easy to find... I'll see what I can come up with.

Do you know anyone over here? That is, do you have family/friends in the U.S.?

Vicious, I would have thought there would be many computer parts vendors in Singapore. I recognize that Singapore is not Taiwan or Hong Kong, but both of those cousin-countries thousands of vendors. Heck, the majority of tech parts are manufactured in Taiwan and China (mainland).

It's getting an SLK-900U @ christmas. Until then... it can heat my room. The money saved in heating bills can help pay for the heatsink.

I used a 28" television and a OC'ed 900 Mhz T-bird to heat my room. That was when I was still living at my parents house.
My room wasn't all that big and the radiator didn't work very well.
My room was nice and warm all year round.
I got very hot during summer though.

Not really, some of the brands that you guys have here we dont. For example; Vantech, swifttech, thermalright and a few more brand. We may have some brand but the product range is very limited. So that's why i hope to find online shop thats ships to where i'm. ;)

Are you sure those parts aren't sold in Singapore, but just under a different brand name? For instance, Chenming cases are sold under probably 15 different brand names, to include Antec.

    Here's what you can do:

Look for parts through Internet vendors in you country/region that seem to be what you want, regardless of brand name. Save a URL link for each product. When you have compiled this list, post a thread under General Hardware with your links and ask for comments. We at Short-Media love challenges like that. Or, save URLs for Singapore online computer parts vendors, and post the links for us along with what you need, and we'll see what we can recommend.

    Hi All

I am a newbie to S-M and it is obvious there are people in this thread that are very intelligent and have dealt with thermal issues.

My background includes circuit design and this involves the close integration with mechanical engineers who have the responsibility for this stuff.

It appears to me that PCs have been developed without much regard to elements including power consumption and thermal properties of the components.

This thread relates to thermal issues and as has been posted earlier, temp is very important to life.

As speeds increase, so does the temperature of the substate ... but not why you would think. The temp rises because there is additional current (think P=IE)

The need to dissipate heat has been long known and mechanisms are falling short.

A new mechanism of using water pipes on the die itself is being developed but that does not help us now.

Thermal compounds to improve efficiency between materials have been in use for years and fans are the current method to remove heat ... the more, the better.

I do not claim to be a serious gamer or an overclocker but I do have a weird idea that works (but only if you are a case modder) !

It is actually pretty simple. So simple in fact that it is often discounted as NO ! that can't work !

All you need is a 2 or 3 inch wide roll of copper strip. Make a solid thermal connect to the CPU or Vid processor and make 7 inches of the strip exposed in air. use thermal grease and you will be amazed that this copper strip gets really hot .. really quick

A fan on this copper strip will cause your core temps to drop big time !

    Till next time

Huh? So, basically a huge heatspreader. Yeah, that'll work. Are you talking about using this instead of a heatsink (I hope not :D) or in between the heatsink and the CPU, just to serve as basically an extension to the heatsink?

Tacoguy - I see a future for you here at S-M. Stick around, OK?

(Let's see, lunchtime - enough time for me to run to Home Depot and grab some copper stock?)

LOL ! Heat spreader ... actually may be closer to the mark than you think !

dissipation of heat is a direct function of surface area and the ability to transfer that to the ambient.

I seem to remember Tg =Ta + Ths +t all other stuff

Yikes ! that was years ago !

you really want me to dig out those dusty textbooks ?

    You are a meanie :-)
