Something that just came to me. Waterproof - if it says: 3M or 10M, don't ever get it wet. Not even washing your hands. Don't spit while wearing it. 100M - ok for a casual swim. Don't take below a depth you can't go without a scuba tank. 200M - rating is the generally accepted minimum for actual scuba diving.
I actually enjoy doing them... a lot. I don't know why. I love watches, but I don't know crap about the innards beyond the reliability of certain movements and manufacturers. Maybe my next step will be to learn all the individual components so I can make an educated guess about the fit and finish of a specific watch.
I have three more watches that I can look at, soon. A Timex quartz, another eBay gamble, and the Orient in my OP.
Ten thousand years later- @Thrax under $150-- preferably something I can wear all the time and is unlikely to get super scratched or banged up when I have to scavenge through all the shit in my backpack or hop off my bed and hit a bedpost along the way (did that the other day, ouch).
@Annes Yes, you would TOTALLY rock a huge man watch
I highly recommend Seiko, Bulova or Timex in that price range. Make sure to look for quartz, as it's the most durable.
If you're really patient, you could probably also find a fantastic Citizen watch for <$150.
It'll be hard in this price range, but specifically look for something stainless steel with a sapphire crystal face. Sapphire is the most resistant to scratching.
I'm not really worried about it looking unfeminine, more about it being too big and clunky. Getting a watch without links is a great idea to fix that, though.
I got an awesome Citizen watch at Costco for just over $100... I was looking at them again when I was there last week and they had several styles all under $150... so if you can coerce someone with a costco membership into taking you over to a nearby one you should be able to get a Citizen watch within your price range
Edited to add: 7 years on it is a bit scratched but only if you look for it, compared to every other watch I have ever owned it has held up remarkably.

Soooo... this first one, I don't really have a good picture of, and I can't get a good picture of since it is currently hanging from a painting at home with @Myrmidon, and I am elsewhere. However, as a consolation prize, have this sweet picture that I took of it this one time for the aforementioned boyfriend extraordinaire.
And here are some pictures of the other watches that I took today. Bonus: you get to see my awesome sheets!
I like the first pocket watch's design as well as the relic. Mm pocket watches.
Thrax: Your voice is soft, and I liked the 'sickest cow' part. I might watch more of these videos too.

The pocket watch in the first picture is actually set to Iowa time. I think I have about twenty watches all together. When I was in high school, I'd wear 3 watches on each wrist and set them all to different times; a watch for every place I wanted to visit. One for Rome, one for London, and so on.
Then some other people started to do that, though, and the 16 year old rebel that I was couldn't be caught dead in a fad, so that was the end of that.

On a completely unrelated note, and just because I don't know where to point this out... has anyone else noticed that the threads are listing the creators twice? Like, this one is "Thrax Thrax".
Can someone please change their username to "Pizza" and start a discussion?

I received my AK Homme Whothefuckknows this evening. Pictures forthcoming, but I'm already immensely pleased with the value I received for the money.
The case is in flawless condition; the band is surprisingly nice to the extent that it may actually be real leather (smells it, anyhow), plus it's quite comfortable; the dial has no errors of any kind and the finishing on the movement is respectable (what you might consider "ordinary" grade). I've also since learned that its proper name is the AK Homme AK-W158.
I'm also in doubt about my initial assessment of the movement as a Liaocheng or, at the very least, the ML7101. Having spent some time giving the SLZT movements a closer look, the arrangement of the complications on this watch don't match my conclusion that this has an ML-7101. Instead, I'm beginning to suspect a Chinese Standard Movement by Hangzhou Watch Company or PTS Resources, judging by the artwork on the day/night wheel.
I'm bewildered for now, but I'll keep investigating. In short: it's good for the money and I look forward to wearing it.
How do you go about looking for mushroom brands? Are there particular sellers, or item lists out there?
You must rent or buy a specially trained mushroom brand sniffing pig. Their snouts are ideal for honing in on good quality mushroom brands while avoiding the toxic ones.
Brands with bullshit/invented histories and Chinese guts, often called "Germasian" brands (acceptable-to-good quality, overpriced but can be a good buy if you catch a deal): Invicta Stührling Original Swiss Legend Stauer Croton Edouard Lauzieres Zodiac Jacques Leman Android Rotary Adee Kaye Swiss Legend Gevril Tauchmeister Aeromatic 1812 Calvaneo 1852 Steinhausen Graf von Monte Wehro Javelle Theorema Rousseau Sorna etc.
Note that the sellers of the "generally good eBay brands" have not yet learned that it's important to put the brand of the watch, you know, anywhere in the listing. So you're going to have to use this search and look at the pictures.
I'd take Android off that list as their history isn't BS or made-up: "Founded in 1991, Android came to fruition through Wing Liangs’ fascination and dedication to create a futuristic timepiece that could combine the traditional values of watch making with modern day living...."
Also, their movements vary from passable Chinese Standards to decent Sea Gulls and Miyotas all the way up to Hangzhou tourbillions. And their customer service is supposedly quite good.
I only say this because I did quite a bit of reading about the brand this morning. I don't think they deserve to be associated with the likes of Invicta. :/

@CB your collection is boss, flat out.
This thread is pretty great.

Also patience, HA.
Make sure that the width of the strap matches the lug width of your chosen watch.
//EDIT: Don't forget to look at men's watches, too. They can be very feminine with the right strap.
