Kyle is gone
Last night, Kyle (@TheRedburn, née MasterBuilderK) was hit by a truck while biking. He was killed nearly instantly.
Nothing else matters in my post from here on in, but I'll tell you more since we're all human and want to know more.
It happened fairly late. The truck ran a stoplight; Kyle had the right of way. No DUI was involved and the driver did stop and was arrested. It happened at 12 Mile & Mound, near the old house. An off-duty Warren detective was nearby so the response was extremely fast.
Brian, Nicole, Perry, Tracey, and Ray each rushed to the hospital separately. Aaron and Cola rushed home to give Nicole their car.
I got the text just before midnight as I was about to crawl into my sleeping bag after getting 12 young boys to set up their campsite, eat, and go to sleep at a giant Scouting event happening out near the airport. Luckily another adult from our unit happened to be on staff at the event and was able to cover for me (2 adults are required in camp and there were only 2 of us). I left my tent and walked the mile and a half to my car in the rain, gear strapped to my back.
I got home about 1am. Soon after, the storm really picked up and started pouring. Brian and Nicole returned from the hospital about 2am. Perry spent the night with friends.
I'll keep you updated of the plans.

No words to describe the profound sadness all of us are feeling right now. Kyle was a great kid with an amazing future. His light was put out too soon. Please let us know the arrangements. Dagmara and I would like to pay our respects.

Jeff, Leah, Andy, and Becks have all stopped by today. House is open if anyone local wants to stop by this weekend. Please don't feel obligated but you're surely welcome.
Also, grieving is a messy weird thing. If it makes you uncomfortable to put yourself in the middle of it, here's two quick things to help you navigate it: how you can help, and how to not say the wrong thing.
I've been in genuine shock since last night. I'm out at TwitchCon with @DontCallMeKelso @UPSKingpin and @Chooch and we were having an absolute blast at a meetup right when we received the news. Absolutely gutwrenching. We were all in shock and I remember very little of it until I woke up with a searing hangover.
Kyle, I love you. This isn't fair and I can't process it. Life just will not be the same without MBK.
Everyone, take care of yourselves and hug those around you.
Fuck. It feels like just yesterday we were talking in a thread about working on his car. If there’s anything I can do to help, please don’t hesitate to ask.
I made this discussion and the Stories discussion public at Brian's request.
Lots more friends & family stopped by today after my post above. Thanks to all of you.
@primesuspect Brian, I know what a loving kind hearted man you are and by extension how special your kids must be. I'm so sorry for this devastating loss.
The fundraiser just crossed $15,000. Thank you, everyone.
Everyone that influenced Kyle’s life should be proud of the man he was.
I remember a scruffy shirtless kid scaling the roof of the warren house and bugging me for hours about bionicles lore, then in the blink of an eye an impressive young man with a tremendous amount of perspective on life and confidence in himself and his future.
This is incredibly sad and tragic. I cant imagine the grief everyone at ICHQ is going through, but Im thinking of you all.
Brian, Sherry (Ladyhawk) & I were stunned by this news. All our prayers to you and your family friend. Love and good wishes for all of you. If we can do anything for you just ask. Dave & Sherry
Plans for an event will be forthcoming. We've been hung up by the medical examiner, which we expect to be resolved today.
Ray's FB post this morning. 😭
Thank you @mertesn for finding the Mars rover boarding pass. I've embedded it into the home page (not on mobile).
NASA is collecting names to send with the rover in 2020. Registration ends today.
Did we get him onto the list?
They did. His name will be on there. I have no words. Thank you so so much
That's so fucking awesome. What an amazing community.
Perry spent Saturday night at the family cabin up north with lots of friends. One of their mutual friends was at college in the UP, so that was a meeting point they could all get to for a night. He safely returned yesterday and spent the evening at ICHQ until the wee hours.
Detectives are building a criminal case of reckless driving against the person who hit Kyle. That will probably take most of the week. The medical examiner is no longer blocking things.
Funeral arrangements should be done late this evening and will be shared.
I took the day off work, as did @Aaron. More friends have stopped by.
Honestly the best part of my day yesterday was crying into @cola on the sofa for 20 minutes. Until Perry showed up, anyway. That's the best part of any day.
Service for family and close friends followed by a very large memorial celebration (all welcome) will be Thursday.
Times and details later tonight.
Kyle's memorial celebration will take place at the The War Memorial in Grosse Pointe Farms (32 Lake Shore Dr) this Thursday, Oct 3 at 1:30pm. Lunch buffet will be served at 2:15, and there will be an open beer/wine bar. All are welcome. We expect it to last 2-3 hours (probably ending at 4 or 4:30).
Family and close friends are invited to Wujek Calcaterra & Sons funeral home (There are two! We'll be at 36900 Schoenherr Rd in Sterling Heights) starting at 10am (same day) with a short service beginning at noon. It takes approximately 30 minutes to travel from here to The War Memorial.
Icrontians traveling to Detroit will be welcome at ICHQ any time Thursday and thru the weekend. Please contact Lincoln if you need attic lodging.
Welp see yall on Thursday. pls bring hugs.
We're planning to stay in a hotel and will be renting a car. We'll most likely be staying in the Warren area. If anyone will be nearby we'll be more than happy to shuttle you back and forth. Details to follow.
Brian,
Yeah, I don't know what to say.
Be well.
That goes for everyone.
I want to be clear anyone is welcome at the house, as many times as you care to stop by, all week and thru the weekend. You're also welcome to text or call when you're ready. It's not overwhelming. We're cool with crying more.
I have to leave on a business trip Sunday night, but Brian would appreciate visitors next week as well.
I can only send hugs and tears from Florida, in addition to a small contribution to the memorial fund. Sorry.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of this community my sister and I will be able to attend. Through all this sadness, our hearts are so full with love and gratitude. Thank you so much @primesuspect and @Linc. We love you guys and we’ll see you soon.
