Athlon XP will have no PCI Express support

AMD today confirmed that it has no plans to include support for PCI Express for future Athlon XP processors.

This might leave Athlon XP owners with no hope of future graphics upgrades, but it comes as no surprise. AMD has publicly said it wants to displace its XP chips with 64-bit processors.

6 May 2004 ~ 1:15am Spinner I think AMD is simply talking in retrospect for the Socket type as a whole. They're saying that there will be no new Athlon XP supporting motherboards which have PCI Express capability. Not because they actually make them, but presumably because they and the chipset manufacturers have decided, or AMD has learned, there won't be any Socket A based boards with those features.

We asked Via whether it would produce chipsets supporting PCI-E for XPs, and it said it has no such product in its roadmaps.

I think it's just badly worded. In a nutshell, AMD is just being the messenger for the whole Socket A standard as a whole.

I don't know, read between the lines.

Intends to produce 32bit only Socket 754 CPUS. With the onboard memory controller, SSE2 & HT800 these lowend chips will be more powerful than the AXP (Clock for clock)
8 May 2004 ~ 6:25am EyesOnly My next cpu will be A64 but that doesn't mean that it will be a great cost for upgrade. I mean there's the 2800+ socket 754 so there will prolly be others. Still i'm not switching cpu untill pci-express is here for 2 reasons:
1. games run just fine on AXP. Good graphic card is more important.
2 i still haven't put together my AXP rig so i don't wont to upgrade before that.

So let's just wait and see what sockets becomes good and then decied if you should go for 754 or 939. Or if chipzilla will be better by then.

That will become the new cost-effictive AMD CPU choice.
8 May 2004 ~ 9:57am madmat I'm waiting to see some benches of that new 32bit 754 and the new multicored Intels before I decide on an upgrade path and, yes, I know the multicored Intels won't be here for a good while yet but I have no plans to upgrade until then. When they do come out I'll prolly sell this system and build a new one to replace it.
8 May 2004 ~ 12:03pm Omega65 the 32bit only CPUs will have only 256K L2 cache, but otherwise when running 32bit software they perform the same as regular A64s
9 May 2004 ~ 2:49am madmat Dropping the L2 cache to 256k will lower the performance a wee bit IMO but how much of a hit it will take remains to be seen, for the proof behind my theory look at the performance in real world apps of a 2500+ barton as opposed to a 2200+ T-Bred-b AXP and you'll understand where I'm coming from, in many apps it makes very little difference but in some that added 256k makes a decent difference (gaming mainly) and since the apps that see the biggest boost from added L2 are the type I generally run that's why I'm intrested in seeing real world benches.
I still think the 32bit 754's should be impressive though.
