Dell Goes AMD

Dell Computers today announced it will be selling AMD based servers at the end of 2006

Product Leadership

* Dell will end the year with the broadest and highest quality product line in its history, including a new generation of servers, and new storage products, desktop and notebook computers, and printers.
* [b]In the enterprise, we will launch new ninth generation servers featuring Intel’s Woodcrest microprocessors. Dell will also introduce new AMD Opteron processors in our multi-processor servers by the end of the year offering a great new technology to our customers at the high-end of our server line.[/b]
* On the client side, our focus on the XPS brand and acquisition of Alienware signals a renewed vigor around product design and quality for desktops and notebooks. In mobility, we will enhance our line this fall with Intel’s new energy-efficient Merom processor. And, we will have Intel’s Conroe in our desktops and workstations later this year.

I do belive that the ongoing trial between AMD and Intel, has something to do with it.

No sir I can't stop myself, I must let it out ...

Now we have 2 things to look forward to;
1. The price of success will also be the increase in AMD processors because there will be so much more demand. AMD is going to have to build more factories and /or increase the size of current plants.
2. Intel will go back to basics and become more engineering oriented quality wise. We will see new things that we would have never seen without AMD gaining a respecable market share.
Moreover the competition has been a good thing and it will only become more interesting from here on out! Just think, without AMD's persistent presence we would still be on P III's.

19 May 2006 ~ 8:42am madmat I knew that after Dell snapped up Alienware that it was just a matter of time before Dell crawled in bed with AMD. A bit quicker than I'd imagined but still, it was inevitable.
19 May 2006 ~ 9:22am jradmin I saw it this morning and I had to laugh. I told my bud the other day (who workd at the local Dell plant here in NC) that it was only a matter of time before someone saw the light.

Where have you been? It's been happening for the last three years, especially the last two. AMD has been capturing more and more market share consistently. Just one example is off-the-shelf retail PCs. AMD 'owns' over 50% of this market now. Five years ago it was probably 10%, if that.

This fight between AMD and Intel will benefit all users.
And in the beginning there were companys, like the Digital Equipment and IBM.
Both who in some mysterious way pushed both AMD and Intel forward.
For reason unknown to modern man ...

I'm looking forward to Intels come back, and AMD's answer.
Fanboys has destroyed so many threads.

19 May 2006 ~ 6:53pm RWB I love this competition... think of the areas with little to no competition and then think of AMD vs Intel, or ATi vs NVidia and realise Fanboyism ain't crap. I wonder what itwould be likeif MS had actual rivals for example, I mean I like the Windows OS(XP and 2000 are nice) but what would they be like had more competition been around.

I love both of my computers, I love my Pentium M 2GHz and I love my Athlon X2 3800+... I like the x700 in the Intel Laptop and the 6600GT in the AMD desktop. I dunno where I am going with this anymore.
19 May 2006 ~ 11:17pm Mt_Goat Fanboys really don't do anyone any good. While they may be loyal to the banner they carry they are blind to the truth and don't even try to understand. It is the informed consumer that follows the tide that has the biggest impact on the market. Why do you think things have changed the way they have? On the other hand, it isn't bad to be an informed consumer that has a 'preferance' for one or another. I think that is the boat most of us here at S-M are in.
