Sisoft Sandra 2009 SP3
Sisoft Sandra is a great synthetic benchmark suite that allows testing of numerous system components. I’ll be using the CPU Arithmetic, Cryptography, Memory Bandwidth and Memory Latency tests.
We’re using version 15.99, which is friendly to processors containing two, three or four cores.
Sandra shows the Core i7 920 to be better at pure number crunching than the new Phenom II. Hyperthreading really helps boost the processing power.
The Phenom II consistently kicks butt when it comes to cryptography. No surprises here.
Memory bandwidth for both processors is exceedingly high and both have no problem shuffling large amounts of data throughout the system. The Core i7 leads in this arena for desktop processors but the Phenom II comes closer. Because the Core i7 runs triple channel memory with an independent memory controller versus the Phenom II X4’s dual channel system with the memory controller integral to the CPU, it’s an apples-to-oranges comparison. Still, we can’t argue with the results.
The Core i7 has a slight lead in this department too, but its margin of victory is slim until large chunks of data enter the equation.
