Kanez, you can come and sleep on my other couch. Since I bought Doom 3 and we are broke as hell, I'm on the big one. You're taller though, so I'll trade you....

thanks for looking out for me. I'll have sell some of this old hardware to be able to afford gas to drive up there. tell you what, you still want to buy addaboy.com? i mean the $10 you offered would go a long way at this point.

If it's for sale, I'll contribute $10 towards the GeForce fund in exchange for addaboy, sure ;D

I got Doom 3 today. Seems to run pretty good so far in 1024x768 and high quality as I had hoped. But when I installed the beta cats this happened... I've seen this before and sliding bars in the control panel all the way to the right fixed the problem. They're already there, though. Could it be the anisotropic filtering? I really don't wanna turn it off. :) I haven't done much testing, and for now I don't know if the drivers really made that big a difference. Same with the .cfg file settings.

Nevermind... ATi Tray Tools had the textures at high performance instead of quality. I haven't looked yet, but I'm certain that fixed the problem.

For the timedemo my system averaged 25.5 fps on the first run. ~28.3 on the second and third. Is there any way to make it not wait for my HDD when entering new areas? Does this happen on lower quality settings as well? I can see myself getting shot when I open some door later on...

Sounds good, I'll try it out.

EDIT: I have tried it now.

41 FPS and I ran the Timedemo twice, it was a bit choppy first time around.

    A64 3200+ @ 220 * 11
Radeon 9700pro (no AGP lock, so it will be running faster than stock)
    cat 4.9 beta
    1280*1024
    High Quality
    "Balanced" open GL settings, 2*AA

    20.4 fps

Guess I need a new vid card :(

(using the cache tweaks doesn't really affect fps for the vast majority of people, but it improves the single player experience, makes the whole thing less choppy)

    Try 1024x768 instead.
That is the resolution I am using, with a GFX quite similar to yours.

I don't have a problem with it really, it's totally playable at this res despite my low timedemo score. Would be nice to have a card to match the rest of my system though :)

My friend has a computer with a R7500. An old computer with a P3 933 512mb and a GF4 MX ran it better than his 1.7 GHz P4. ;D No timedemo scores.

I wonder if it's the P4 or the 7500 that's holding him back. I may have to do some experimenting when I get home... I've got a r7500 desktop card and p4, p3, and amd systems to put it in...

you guys who have under a gig of ram really need to mod your cfg, at least i did and i have 512mb. here are the changes i made:
    seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "512"
    seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "128"
    seta image_useCache "1"
    seta image_cacheMegs "85"
    seta image_cacheMinK "2048"
    seta image_anisotropy "4"
    seta com_showFPS "1"

of course the fps thing wont increase performance, but i like it. just make sure you make a copy of your original cfg before you mod it, especially if you play with emmory settings

try to make your cachemegs about 1/6 of your physical memory...my cfg only applies to my computer, which you can see in my sig. mod yours appropriatly. ill run the time demo later, got a hot date. cya fellas.

I'm positive it's the 7500. The card is below minimum spec for the game, and yet the P3 600 MHz below spec runs it better with a GeForce 4 MX. Both computers have 512 megs RAM. I've heard that a 1.4 GHz P3 beats a low end P4 like that, but it's only 933 Mhz...

My computer does an awful lot of stuttering when entering new areas. Is this a RAM thing? Is my system using the page file for the game? I think it is because when it slows down like that, my HDD is busy. Not good. I'll have to do some testing on lower quality settings <strike>tommorow</strike> later today... I need to sleep for now!

But the GF4MX and the 7500 are just about on par; my laptop hits ~5500 in 3dmark 2001se.

    *shrugs*

What does it mean when they say certain GFX cards are "supported" by the game? Does that mean that lesser cards just don't have the horsepower to keep up? The minimum ATi card is the 8500. For nVidia it's the GF4 MX/GF3 Ti...

EDIT: w00t! I've been upgraded to "Short-Media God" How many posts does that mean I have, besides too many? ;D

That pausing before every door opening is kind of annoying. I have 512mb of ram, maybe I'll try Gravite's settings.... Whenever a new area is about to be reached, the hard drive fires up and the whole game freezes for a second or three... But once the area "loads", it runs smooth as hell..... :-/

I've read that it's the video card's memory filling with new texture info. When it loads all those textures and filters all at once, the AGP bus saturates, and the hard drive thrashes a bit.

Honestly, I thought only the older cards (like mine) would do that.

Got home from a week's holiday last night about 7:30pm, headed straight to Future Shop and got my copy. On my P4 2.8 with 512MB RAM and 9800XT, which is 256MB RAM, it does exactly as prime describes.

Having been away, I'm not familiar with "Gravite's settings". Did they help? If so, are they up in this thread or elsewhere?

I haven't seen a thread for config changes/workarounds - someone start one please :buck:

    seta com_showFPS "1"

I haven't messed with my anistropy but the rest I have.
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "512" then you need to enable it or something by setting downSizeBump "1" ...same for downSizeSpecularLimit ...set downSizeSpecular "1".

with that said ...what I have changed is this ...not that I get a huge increase I just thought I'd respond for those who are experimenting.

set com_allowconsole "1" ...enables the ~ to console
set com_showfps "1" ...displays fps in upper right corner
set com_videoram "128" ...before it displayed that I only had "64"
    set image_downSizeBumpLimit "512" ...set to "1024" for 512mb cards
set image_downSizeBump "1" ...enables previous line
    set image_downSizeLimit "512" ...set to "1024" for 512mb cards
set image_downSize "1" ...enables previous line
    set image_downSizeSpecularLimit "512" ...set to "1024" for 512mb cards
set image_downSizeSpecular "1" ...enables previous line
    set image_cachemegs "128" ...caches textures
set image_usecache "1" ...turns previous line on
set image_cachemink "10240" ...cache minimum in kilobites ...previous line will not work without this set to something greater than default
set r_displayrefresh "70" ...match monitor refresh

Most if not all of these settings are based on assumption. I'm still experimenting.
